Robert Clavel

Robert Joseph Clavel (born October 15, 1912 in Paris , † July 14, 1991 ibid) was a French film architect . In his time he was considered one of the leading production designers in his country.

Life

Clavel received his artistic training at the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts de Paris . In 1940 he joined the film industry and initially assisted his colleagues Léon Barsacq , Max Douy and Alexandre Trauner . In this role, since the liberation of his hometown in 1944, he was involved in important productions such as Robert Bresson's Die Damen vom Bois de Boulogne and Georges Lampin's The Idiot .

In 1948 Clavel rose to the position of chief architect and in "the 50s and 60s [...] became one of the most outstanding representatives of the elegant cinema set" in his country. Clavel often designed the sets for social melodramas and other high-profile entertainment films (such as Luis Buñuel's Belle de Jour - Beauty of the Day with Catherine Deneuve ), in which top star Jean Gabin appeared several times . Clavel also furnished various adventure, action, war and crime films with Eddie Constantine , Anthony Quinn , Alain Delon and Jean-Paul Belmondo , but also designed the buildings for one or the other comedy with Fernandel and Louis de Funès . The directors with whom Clavel worked again and again included Jean-Paul Le Chanois , Henri Decoin , Gilles Grangier , Denys de La Patellière , Yves Robert , Édouard Molinaro and, in the later years, especially Henri Verneuil (twelve films together) and André Cayatte (ten films together).
