Robert Hillenbrand

Robert Hillenbrand (born August 2, 1941 in Damgarten , Germany ) is a British art historian specializing in Islamic art .

Life

Hillenbrand studied at Cambridge and Oxford Universities . In 1974 he received his doctorate with a thesis on The tomb towers of Iran to 1550 at Oxford University. Since 1971 he has taught at Edinburgh University as the successor to David Talbot Rice . In 1989 he became a professor there and was given a chair in Islamic art. In 2007 he was elected a member of the British Academy (FBA) in recognition of his achievements . Hillenbrand has retired since 2007 . He is now an honorary professor in the Department of Studies of Islam and the Middle East . From 2008 to 2009 he was Slade Professor of Fine Art at the University of Cambridge.

Research interests

Hillenbrand's main research interests are Islamic architecture , Islamic painting and iconography . He is particularly interested in Iran and the early Islamic Umayyad Syria .

Hillenbrand has traveled the Islamic world and was visiting professor at Princeton University , the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), Otto Friedrich University Bamberg , Dartmouth College and the University of Groningen . He gave the 1993 Kevorkian Lectures at Columbia University New York .

Hillenbrand is married. His wife Carole Hillenbrand is a well-known British historian and Islamic scholar .
