Robert Spencer

Robert Spencer (born February 27, 1962 in Bedford, New Hampshire ) is an American religious scholar , writer and blogger . In his books, he primarily deals with Islam and jihad . He is the founder and director of the Jihadwatch website . . Considered anti-Muslim, he claims that the Muslim religion is inherently violent and that extremists commit acts of terror because they follow their teachings. Spencer has ties to European racists and neo-fascists. He says these are just casual acquaintances.

Life

Spencer graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a Masters Degree in Religious Studies in 1986 . He is a Fellow of the Free Congress Foundation . Spencer decided not to pursue a doctorate or professor title because - according to his own account - "the studies of the Middle East were highly politicized and had distanced themselves from honest academic work". He was a member of the Christian-Islamic Forum , a Catholic group that has set itself the task of proselytizing Muslims. His views on Islam have been published on Vatican Radio , New York Post , The Washington Times , Canada's The National Post , FrontPageMag, and WorldNet Daily , among others . Spencer was a prominent participant in the anti-Islamization conference in Cologne in 2007, where he met with politicians from the right-wing populist Vlaams Belang to establish a transatlantic alliance. In 2008, he replied to the criticism rejecting the fact that he did not officially support any parties, including Vlaams Belang and the right-wing British National Party .

Stop Islamization of America (SIOA), run by Pamela Geller and Spencer, is classified by the Anti-Defamation League and the Southern Poverty Law Center as a so-called Hategroup (group that incites hatred). Spencer is a member of the Melkite Greek Catholic Church . His grandparents immigrated to the United States because of the religious persecution of Christians from Lebanon , which was then part of the Ottoman Empire .

JihadWatch is a blog created by Spencer. This has been described as one of the most important aspects of counter-jihad .

Reception and controversy

  • He was criticized, however, by the late politician and multiple Prime Minister of Pakistan Benazir Bhutto and the religious scholar Karen Armstrong .
  • On December 20, 2006, the government of Pakistan announced that Spencer's book The Truth About Muhammad would be banned. The government cited the reason for being against the material presented in the book.

  • In 2017, Spencer supported Donald Trump's entry ban for citizens from Muslim countries. He suggested adding Saudi Arabia and Pakistan to the list of prohibited countries. In 2015, together with Geller, he had drafted an 18-point plan for the “preservation and defense of free societies”. He also wrote the script for Geller's anti-Muslim film Can't We Talk About This in 2017 .
