Robertinho Silva (born July 1, 1941 in Rio de Janeiro ) is a Brazilian jazz musician ( percussion , drums , arrangement , composition ), who became known internationally as the sideman of top acts of the Música Popular Brasileira .

Live and act

As a drummer, Silva is initially self-taught . At the age of 15 he became a professional musician and initially played with dance orchestras such as the Conjunto Flamingo. At the age of 17 he began training with Albano Mesquita and Joaquim Neagle. Since 1964, where he accompanied Caubi Peixoto, he can be heard on recordings. In 1969 he became a member of the band of Milton Nascimento , with whom he works regularly to this day. Between 1970 and 1974 he belonged to Som Imaginário around Wagner Tiso and Zé Rodrix and was also involved in their first albums (1970/1971). He also accompanied João Donato , Marcos Valle, Gilberto Gil , Taiguara, Toninho Horta , Roberto Carlos , Gal Costa , João Bosco , Paulo Moura ( Fibra ) and Egberto Gismonti ( Agua & Vinho ). In 1974 he temporarily moved to the United States, where he worked with Airto Moreira , Moacyr Santos, Ron Carter , Wayne Shorter , Shelly Manne , Peggy Lee , Cal Tjader , Sarah Vaughan , Paul Horn and George Duke . In 1974 he performed with Flora Purim at the Montreux Jazz Festival . In 1981, back in Brazil, he released his first own album in the polygram series Música Popular Brasileira Contemporânea , in which Raul de Souza and Egberto Gismonti were involved. From 1984 further own albums followed, some of which were also released internationally. In 1997 he opened the Centro de Percussão Alternativo Robertinho Silva in his hometown , where he teaches himself. He has also cooperated internationally with Terje Gewelt in recent years . In the field of jazz he was involved in 121 recordings between 1972 and 2011.
