Roberto Traversini

Roberto Traversini (born January 3, 1963 in Cantiano , Italy ) is a former Luxembourg politician . For the Greens , he was a member of the country's parliament from December 2013 to October 2019 and mayor of Differdange from January 2014 to September 2019 .

Career

Traversini is the son of Italian immigrants. He began his professional career as a machine setter at the steel company ARBED , where he worked in three shifts. After a successful retraining he became a municipal official in Sassenheim .

politics

Traversini has been a member of the Greens since 1985. He saw the environment , youth and housing as the main focus of his political work . He co-founded the Center d'initiative et de gestion locale (CIGL) of Differdange, where he was president for many years, of the youth club SABA Déifferdeng and of the Entente des gestionnaires des maisons de jeunes .

In the local elections in 2005, Roberto Traversini was a member of the Differdingen municipal council , and a year later he became first alderman . In January 2014 he succeeded Claude Meisch ( DP ), who had been appointed minister to the government , as mayor.

After the early chamber elections on October 20, 2013 , Roberto Traversini was able to move up to the Chamber of Deputies in December 2013 , as Félix Braz renounced his mandate to become a minister instead. He became the first parliamentarian to be born abroad to non-Luxembourgish parents. In the chamber he was most recently Vice-President of the Petitions Committee .

In the summer of 2019, there were allegations against Traversini that he had initially had construction work carried out in an inherited house in Niederkorn without the necessary permit. It was particularly serious that an associated garden house was located within a nature reserve. After the required permits were granted retrospectively, Environment Minister Carole Dieschbourg also came under fire . Since Traversini had work carried out by the non-profit CIGL and by community employees and this may not be properly accounted for, the public prosecutor's office started criminal investigations against him.

Traversini resigned as Mayor of Differdange on September 23, 2019 because of this "garden shed affair" and subsequently also resigned from the Chamber on October 6, 2019. Christiane Brassel-Rausch , also from the Greens , was elected as mayor's successor on October 9, 2019 . Semiray Ahmedova took over the seat in parliament . Traversini also gave up his post as chairman of the CIGL and retired from active politics.
