He returned to his country in 1980 with a diploma. In 1984 he became General Director of Banque Internationale du Burkina .
Political career
His political career began in 1989 when he was appointed Minister of Transport and Telecommunications. Since 1990 he has been Minister of State with changing areas of responsibility and in May 1992 he became a member of parliament for a constituency in the province of Kadiogo . In June 1993 he took over the post of finance and planning minister in the government of Youssouf Ouédraogo . From September 1993 he was a minister of state without a portfolio in the cabinet. On March 22, 1994 he was Ouédraogos successor as head of government. During his tenure, he privatized a number of state-owned companies, and the circumstances aroused criticism. His relationship with the president cooled and he resigned on February 6, 1996.
Kaboré was part of the Congrès pour la démocratie et le progrès (CDP) of President Blaise Compaoré, who ruled from 1987 to 2014 . In 1996 he was given the post of Special Adviser to the President and was re-elected as a Member of Parliament in the parliamentary elections on May 11, 1997. The CDP won 101 of the 111 seats in these elections. In parliament he became vice-president and his party appointed him general secretary in 1999. On May 6, 2002, he was elected President of the National Assembly by 77 votes to 22 . He held this office until 2012. To this end, he presided over the CDP between June 2003 and the parliamentary elections in December 2012. Internal tensions within the CDP emerged in the wake of the parliamentary elections. Kaboré was ousted along with other close confidants. In January 2014 he separated from the CDP and became chairman of the newly formed party Mouvement du peuple pour le progrès (MPP) .
The new party nominated him for the presidential election on November 29, 2015 . Here he prevailed against his strongest competitor Zéphirin Diabré already in the first round with almost 53.5% .
