The rock'n'popmuseum is a museum for popular culture in Gronau (Westphalia) . The exhibition shows the cultural history of 20th century popular music . In the permanent exhibition there are numerous exhibits from the history of music. The museum is unique in Germany for this genre of music history.

history

The idea of founding the rock'n'pop museum came from “Panik” rocker Udo Lindenberg , the city's most famous son. A financing plan was drawn up with the participation of the Museum Office and the Borken district . The “ Popkomm ” trade fair for music and entertainment was then won over to help develop the content of the museum concept. In 2003 the concept was completed. The rock'n'popmuseum gGmbH was founded , a non-profit organization that still operates the museum today. The former turbine hall of the textile company Mathieu van Delden serves as the building for the museum . The construction costs of the museum totaled around 15.5 million  DM . After around four years of construction, the rock'n'popmuseum was officially opened on July 21, 2004. On this occasion, Udo Lindenberg and the then Prime Minister of North Rhine-Westphalia, Peer Steinbrück , also appeared and unveiled the sign on “Udo-Lindenberg-Platz”, the museum's official address.

“The turbine hall becomes a wind machine, it always blows fresh wind and lively movement into society. (...) The Rock Museum will be a fountain of youth for Gronau. I wish you that, with a whole fresh rock'n'roll heart. "

- Udo Lindenberg

concept

The central subject of the rock'n'pop museum is music. The exhibition links the musical experience with information and, above all, the sensual experience with interaction . Media installations make the music tangible for the visitor. The development of popular music, which has been going on for over 100 years, is made audible and tangible for visitors. The museum provides an extensive background on around 100 years of rock and pop history. Regular special exhibitions and key themes complement the permanent exhibition with individual aspects of rock and pop history.

The rock'n'popmuseum sees itself as a place of science and education. The museum offers an extensive database on the history of rock and pop music, which is used as a source for scientific work. In addition, workshops and seminars for teachers of various subjects are offered. One example of this is the teacher training as part of the special exhibition on the Scorpions "Winds of change - rock music in Germany in the socio-political area of tension between imitation, agitation, progression and affirmation".

exhibition

The permanent exhibition is supplemented several times a year by changing special exhibitions.

Permanent exhibition

In the permanent exhibition, museum visitors can experience the history of popular music from 1877 to the present day in multimedia. Starting with the chamber music of the late 19th century, the cultural history of music is presented. The exhibits include a shirt by Jimi Hendrix , a guitar by Pete Townshend and gloves by Marlene Dietrich .
