Life

Film actor

De la Rosa, son of Filipino martial arts fighter Feliciano de la Rosa and actress and artist Rosaria Lim, started studying at Far Eastern University after completing his schooling .

During his student days he practiced various sports and was, among other things, team captain of the basketball team of central Luzon and in 1932 became a college champion in welterweight boxing . In addition, he took part in various debating and speaking competitions in various provinces of the Philippines and colleges between 1932 and 1934 and won the gold medal for speech competitions in 1933, named after the then Senator Claro M. Recto .

De la Rosa, who completed his studies with a degree in art , played his first leading role as a schoolboy in 1932, alongside Rosa del Rosario and his uncle Gregorio Fernandez in the silent film Ligaw na Bulaklak, directed by Jose Nepomuceno . At the beginning of his sound film career , he often appeared as a singer and accompanied himself on a ukulele , as he did when he was a student at Zarzuelas in Pampanga. As an actor, he initially played mainly the role of the charming lover at the side of numerous well-known film actresses.

During the occupation of the Philippines by Japan during the Second World War , de la Rosa appeared in stage shows at the Life Theater and, through the experience gained there, increasingly took on character roles in films such as 'Ricardo' in 48 Oras (1950) alongside Nena Cardenas .

In 1955 he played alongside Emma Alegre the role of 'Roberto' in the film Higit sa Lahat, directed by his uncle Gregorio Fernandez . For this role he received the award for best leading actor from the Filipino Academy of Movie Arts and Sciences (FAMAS) and from the Asia-Pacific Film Festival in 1956 .

For one of his last films Veronica (1957), in which he starred alongside Paraluman and Lolita Rodriguez , he was again nominated for the award for best actor in 1958.

Senator and presidential election 1961

Shortly thereafter, de la Rosa ended his film career and ran successfully for a mandate as Senator in the 1957 elections for the Partido Liberal ng Pilipinas and was elected on November 12, 1957 with 1,715,123 votes after Gil J. Puyat , Arturo Tolentino and Eulogio Balao voted with the fourth best result. He was a member of the Senate from December 30, 1957 to December 29, 1963.

For the presidential election on November 14, 1961, he first announced his candidacy as a non-party against the candidates of the Partido Liberal ng Pilipinas, Diosdado Macapagal, and the incumbent president, Carlos P. Garcia of the Nacionalista Party. However, at the height of his election campaign, he withdrew his candidacy. Despite his large following in his election campaign appearances, he was critical of his chances, as both he and Macapagal came from Pampanga and thus from Luzon , and thus would probably split the voters there, while the incumbent from the south Garcia probably the voters from Mindanao and The majority of the Visayas would be bound by them.

Since de la Rosa, on the other hand, saw a change in the presidency as necessary, he ultimately waived in favor of Diosdado Macapagal, who was his first marriage to his sister Purita de la Rosa and was thus his brother-in-law.

In the Senate elections of November 12, 1963, de la Rosa ran with 2,465,488 votes, significantly more votes than in his 1957 election, but only achieved fifteenth place among the eight Senate mandates to be awarded and thus left the Senate.

ambassador

In 1965, shortly before the end of his tenure, Macapagal appointed him ambassador to Cambodia , where he was also the doyen of the diplomatic corps . After finishing this activity, Macapagal's successor Ferdinand Marcos appointed him ambassador to the Netherlands ; as such he was also accredited in Poland , Bulgaria and Czechoslovakia . As ambassador to the Netherlands, he was most recently doyen of the diplomatic corps again.

During his employment as ambassador the Philippines came closer to the socialist states of the Eastern Bloc . In addition, he was committed to the art and culture of the Philippines by holding exhibitions of Filipino artists and participating in international conferences and competitions on art.

In 1984 de la Rosa tried a political comeback, but failed with his candidacy for a seat in Congress ( Batasang Pambansa ).

De la Rosa, who died of heart failure, was married to the famous actress Lota Delgado until his death and had six children with her. Another child came from his first marriage to Dolores Lolita Bayot. His siblings Tommy de la Rosa , Africa de la Rosa and Jaime de la Rosa were also well-known Filipino actors of their time.
