Roger Fugen

Roger Fugen (* 1939 in Cambrai ; † January 6, 2016 ) was a French jazz musician ( drums ).

Live and act

Fugen studied solfège , tenor saxophone and drums as a soldier in Algeria . In 1960 he recorded with his combo from Jean-Marie Billiaert (alto saxophone), JP. Toulouse (vibraphone), Luc Mery (piano) and Alain Lefebvre (bass) took part in the jazz week at Casino de Canastel near Oran . During the war he also socialized with René Bec, the pianist of Aimé Barelli's orchestra . After the end of the Algerian War in 1962, he settled in Paris and began his professional career in the band of trombonist Al Lirvat , who performed at Club La Cigale . He also toured Scandinavia with trumpeter Pierre Linares and had the opportunity to jam with musicians like Stan Getz and Cannonball Adderley .

Then Fugen played in the big band of Daniel Janin , who u. a. Also André Paquinet and Roger Guérin belonged ( Music for Big Band , 1965). He also worked on recordings by Pierre Gossez , André Hodeir ( Anna Livia Plurabelle ), Enrico Macias and Georges Rabol . He also appeared in television shows (in the Raymond Lefèvre Orchestra ) and played in well-known venues such as the Lido , the Moulin Rouge and the Olympia . He has also accompanied guest stars such as Ray Charles , Michel Legrand , The Swingle Singers , Enrico Macias and Harry Belafonte .

Fugen, who lived in Rosny-sous-Bois near Paris, is co-author with Gérard Spiers of the textbook Actual Drums Independence , which was published by Stock Zurfluh . In the field of jazz, according to Tom Lord , he was involved in seven recording sessions between 1965 and 1989, most recently with Alain Marion.
