Roland Streiner

Roland Streiner (born November 3, 1961 in Klagenfurt ) is an Austrian choir director , arranger , composer and music teacher , director of the former Carinthian State Conservatory and since 2019 rector of the Gustav Mahler University for Music in Klagenfurt.

Live and act

In addition to attending school at the Bundesrealgymnasium Klagenfurt Viktring (musical branch) at the Carinthian State Conservatory, Streiner received lessons in piano from Hanna Inzko and Walter Langer and trombone from Rupert Hörmannseder. From 1980 he studied music education at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna (including singing with Rotraud Hausmann and piano with Hans Wolleitner) as well as the jazz department with Roland Batik ( jazz piano ) and Heinz Czadek (jazz arrangement) at the Vienna Conservatory . From 1987 three years of study for song and oratorio under Erik Werba at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna followed. He also completed various master classes in classical song singing with Peter Schreier, among others .

From 1983, in addition to smaller solo engagements as a baritone, a collaboration with the Vienna Art Orchestra and Wolfgang Puschnig developed , which was formative for Streiner. He was a member of the Arnold Schoenberg Choir and was also assistant to Erwin Ortner . Also formative were rehearsals by the Vienna State Opera as part of the Wiener Festwochen and the collaboration between the Arnold Schönberg Choir and Nikolaus Harnoncourt .

Streiner worked several years as a music manager for classical productions in the Austrian Broadcasting (1988-1991) and in productions with labels like Teldec , Koch Records . In 1998, the production “ Franz Schubert - The Complete Secular Choral Works” with the Arnold Schönberg Choir, which he was in charge of, received numerous international awards. For two years, Streiner was the stage conductor at the Vienna State Opera. In 1993 he took on a teaching position for singing, choir conducting and accompaniment at the Carinthian State Conservatory. From 2001 to 2019 he was director of this institute and was also artistically responsible for the cooperation with the University of Klagenfurt in the department of applied musicology until 2014 .

The main focus of the teaching activity was on classical song singing (interpretation), choral composition and sentence technique, subject didactics and music management. In 2000, Streiner founded the Carinthian Choir Academy , which he handed over to lead in 2003. Since 1995 he has led vocal projects as part of the training for choir directors at the Carinthian State Conservatory and founded the vocal ensemble StudioVokal Kärnten in 2005 , which aims at stylistically hybrid programs.

In the years 2000–2012 he wrote numerous compositions, arrangements and works for vocal and instrumental ensembles. At the end of 2017, the conversion of the Carinthian State Conservatory to the Gustav Mahler Private University for Music began, which Streiner has headed as Rector since July 2019.
