Rolf Saltzwedel

Rolf Saltzwedel (born July 4, 1928 in Lübeck ; † October 8, 2016 in Lübeck) was a German homeland historian and journalist .

Life

Since childhood a member of the Lübeck singing and playing group around Bruno Grusnick , Saltzwedel published a commemorative publication for the outstanding choir director in 1981. As a contemporary witness, he reported in the yearbook Der Wagen about the Evangelical Lutheran pastor Karl Friedrich Stellbrink , who was executed by the Nazi rulers in 1943 with three Catholic priests from Lübeck.

After graduating from high school at Katharineum in Lübeck and studying classical philology at the Universities of Kiel and Göttingen , Saltzwedel had been a teacher of Greek and Latin at the Katharineum since 1956, where he directed the annual Low German nativity play in St. Aegidia . From 1976 until his retirement in 1990 he was director of the Ernestin School in Lübeck.

One of his two sons is the Spiegel editor Johannes Saltzwedel .

Act

From 1966 to 2001, Saltzwedel published the Lübeck yearbook Der Wagen as the successor to Paul Brockhaus for the Society for the Promotion of Charitable Activities and published numerous articles on the cultural history of his hometown in it. As editor and author, he also initiated a critical examination of the Nazi past, which had not taken place under his predecessor, who was burdened by the Nazis. In addition, he worked on the editorial committee for the Lübeckische Blätter published by the “Gemeinnützige” and several other committees of the society. As the founding chairman of the Buddenbrookhaus development association , from 1989 onwards he was instrumental in ensuring that the family home of Thomas and Heinrich Mann could be opened to the public in 1993 as a museum with a permanent exhibition and conference facilities. In addition, he was active on the church council of St. Marien zu Lübeck from 1965 and was a member of the artistic advisory board of the Schleswig-Holstein Ministry of Culture .

Awards

For his services, Saltzwedel received the golden medal of the Society for the Promotion of Charitable Activities in 1998 .
