Romain Lebel Guessagba Sato (born March 2, 1981 in Bimbo ) is a basketball player from the Central African Republic . Mainly used as a shooting guard at college , he is usually used as a small forward in Europe . Sato has been under contract with the Valencia Basket Club since 2013 .

Career

Sato came to the United States in early 1999 with the help of Eugène Pehoua , a participant in the 1988 Olympic basketball tournament . After graduating from High School at Dayton Christian, he moved to Xavier University , where he played in the NCAA from 2000 to 2004 . In the 2004 NBA Draft , he was selected by the San Antonio Spurs at the end of the second round . The following season Sato got no playing time in the NBA due to an inflammation of the patellar tendon. He then moved to the Italian second division Sicc Cucine Jesi , where he became the player with the second-best points average in the league in the 2005/06 season. After he had been briefly under contract with FC Barcelona at the end of the season in the championship play-offs , Sato returned to Italy, this time for the first division club Montepaschi Siena . There he was Italian champion every year with Siena and among other things reached the Final Four tournament in the highest European club competition ULEB Euroleague 2007/08 , in which they finished third. After he was named Player of the Week in the ULEB Euroleague 2008/09 as the most effective player of the matchday, he was elected MVP of the main round in Serie A in the Lega Basket Serie A in the 2009/10 season .

In 2010 Sato moved to the Greek champions Panathinaikos Athens , where he signed a three-year contract. With Panathinaikos Sato was able to win not only a championship and the Greek club cup but also the ULEB Euroleague 2010/11 . After just two years, Sato moved to Fenerbahçe Ülker in Istanbul in the Türkiye Basketbol Ligi . After a rather disappointing season in which Fenerbahçe could only win the Turkish Cup competition and otherwise retired rather early in the ULEB Euroleague 2012/13 and the play-offs of the Turkish championship, the two-year contract was terminated after one season. Sato then joined the Spanish first division club from Valencia . Although Sato did not appear in the highest European competition ULEB Euroleague for the first time after seven seasons , he won the second European club competition, the ULEB Eurocup , with Valencia .

National team

Already at the Africa Cup of Nations 2001 Sato was the outstanding player in the selection of the Central African Republic , but it only reached 9th place. With the national team he achieved 5th place two years later, but did not play for the Central African Republic at the African Championships in 2005 and 2007, which he attributed for the 2007 tournament to the, in his opinion, too short preparation phase. However, he generally agreed to play for the team of the two-time African champions. At the African Cup of Nations 2009 he finished 6th with the national team.
