Ronald Stampfer (born December 16, 1976 in St. Gallenkirch , Vorarlberg ) is a former Austrian ski racer . The slalom and giant slalom specialist won two European Cup races and was Austrian slalom champion in 1999 .

Career

Stampfer celebrated his first successes at the age of 12 when he became Austrian student champion in giant slalom and super-G in his age group in 1989. Five years later, he finished 7th in slalom and 14th in giant slalom at the 1994 Junior World Championship . In the following year he came in the Junior World Championship in 1995 only on rank 17 in slalom and rank 20 in giant slalom.

From the 1995/96 season , Stampfer started in the European Cup in addition to FIS races . The best result was rank 30 in the giant slalom in St. Johann . In the next winter his best result was already 14th place in the slalom of Les Arcs . In the 1997/98 season he was twice in the top ten in the slalom of Les Menuires and the giant slalom of St. Moritz . The 1998/99 season was Stampfers' most successful in the European Cup: On December 16, 1998, he finished second in the Obereggen slalom for the first time and on February 11, 1999, he celebrated his first victory in the Tarvisio slalom . With a further three placements among the top five, he achieved second place behind Michael Walchhofer in the slalom ranking and fourth in the overall ranking. He achieved another success at the Austrian Championships in 1999 , where he secured the Austrian state championship in slalom ahead of Mario Matt and Manfred Pranger . In January 1999, Stampfer had his first two starts in the World Cup . He finished 23rd in the Wengen slalom , but did not qualify for the second run in the Kitzbühel slalom .

Due to his achievements in the European Cup, Stampfer had a permanent place in the World Cup in slalom for the 1999/2000 season . In the first six races, however, he never made it to the second round, only at the end of February did he cross the finish line in the Yongpyong slalom and finished 13th. His best World Cup result ever was achieved on March 9, 2000 in the Schladming night slalom , where he was seventh Reached place. In the European Cup, Stampfer celebrated his second victory this winter in the giant slalom in Krompachy .

In the winter of 2000/01, Stampfer competed in three World Cup races. However, he never got into the second round, which is why he only started in the European Cup in the further course of the season. But even in the European Cup, after finishing fourth and fifth in the giant slalom in Levi at the start of the season, he did not achieve any further top results. Therefore, he lost his place in the ÖSV squad after the season . In winter 2001/02 Stampfer only came to three European Cup appearances, in which the 25th place in the Giant Slalom in Damüls was the best result. Stampfer continued to enjoy success at FIS races, winning five giant slaloms this season alone. After the 2001/02 season, the Vorarlberger ended his career.
