Rossen Milanov ( Bulgarian Росен Миланов , German transcription Rossen Milanow , born January 13, 1965 in Sofia , Bulgaria ) is a Bulgarian conductor. He is the music director of the Princeton Symphony Orchestra . the New Jersey Symphony in C , chief conductor of the Orquesta Sinfonica del Principado de Asturias , in Spain , music director of the Columbus Symphony Orchestra , music director of the Chautauqua Symphony summer festival orchestra and was music director of the Bulgarian New Symphony Orchestra .

life and career

youth

Milanov studied oboe and orchestral conducting at the National Music Academy “Prof. Pantscho Wladigerow ” and at Duquesne University, where he completed his studies with a master's degree as an oboe virtuoso. His further path led him to the Curtis Institute of Music in the USA and, with a scholarship from the Bruno Walter Memorial Scholarship, to the Juilliard School , where he completed his artistic skills as a conductor in both institutions with Otto-Werner Mueller .

Career as a conductor

From 1994 to 1999 Milanov was conductor of the Juilliard School Pre-College Orchestra and music director of the Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestra from 1997 to 2001. In 2000 he followed the call of first assistant conductor to the Philadelphia Orchestra, in 2003 he was promoted to the baton of chief conductor and finally from 2006 to 2010 the position of artistic director of the Mann Center for the Performing Arts ensemble . At the same time from 2003 to 2008 he was chief conductor of the Bulgarian National Radio Symphony Orchestra .

In September 2014, Milanov, with a two-year contract and an option for four more years as music director, took over responsibility for the Columbus Symphony Orchestra and, a month later, the summer festival orchestra of the Chautauqua Symphony Orchestra in the same position .

Awards

In 2005 Milanov was named Bulgarian Musician of the Year. He received the award from the Bulgarian Minister of Culture for his outstanding contribution to Bulgarian culture. In 2011 he received the ASCAP Award for his services to the artistic development of the Princeton Symphony Orchestra .

Milanov worked with Yo-Yo Ma , Itzhak Perlman , Joshua Bell , Midori and Christian Tetzlaff . He has conducted premier pieces by Richard Danielpour , Gabriel Prokofiev and Nicholas Maw as well as the compositions of the winners of the final theses of the Symphony in C

As a conductor in various ballet performances he has collaborated with, among others, Mats Ek at the Zurich Opera House , with Sabrina Matthews and Nils Christe at the Kungliga Baletten in Stockholm , Benjamin Millepied and Andonis Foniadakis at the Grand Théâtre de Genève and Jorma Elo in Philadelphia .

Operas

At the Komische Oper Berlin he conducted Dmitri Shostakowitsch's Lady Macbeth from Mzensk , with the Philadelphia Orchestra Puccini's La bohème , and at the Curtis Opera Theater in Philadelphia , also as a recording for Albany Records , Dominick Argento's Postcard from Morocco .

Music teacher

Milanov is Music Director of the Training Orchestra of the Symphony in C and the New Symphony Orchestra in his hometown of Sofia. He also contributes regularly to the Carnegie Hall for the Link Up program of the Weill Music Institute .

Sound carrier

Milanov recorded sound carriers with Shostakovich's 15th Symphony , the 1st Symphony by Brahms and Joseph Jongens Sinfonia Concertante with the Philadelphia Orchestra, published with the title A Grand Celebration for Gothic Label 2008. With the Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra he recorded works by the Russian composer Alla Pavlova for Naxos 2006. Recordings of Stravinsky's Petruschka and Manuel de Falla's Der Dreispitz with the Orquesta Sinfonica del Principado de Asturias for Classic Concert Records are from the 2010s .
