The Paderquellen are around 200 sources in the urban area of Paderborn . The Pader rises from them , which is the shortest river in Germany at just four kilometers .

Data

Panorama from the Pader spring area at the city administration

Some of them are large karst springs . Together they pour 3,000 to 9,000 liters of water per second (on average 5,000 l / s) and thus result in the strongest German headwaters. The strongest discharge ever measured was 43,700 l / s. From the point in time at which the surface water seeps into the fissures on the Paderborn plateau , it takes two to four days to reach the springs in Paderborn (200 to 400 m / h).

The largest river arms of the Pader arise in six walled spring basins .

From the western Pader springs, below the Paderberg, arise in a city park the Dammpader, the Warm Pader and Börnepader, which are about 6 ° C warmer than the other spring arms.

The Dielenpader and the Rothobornpader arise from the eastern springs near the cathedral , the water of the eye spring gushes out from under the building of the city library.

Further to the north, not far from the historic city wall , lies the Maspernpader spring basin.

Warm paders

Spring basin of the Warm Pader

The Warm Pader, which used to be "laundering Pader" was called, in contrast to the other Pader has a constant temperature of about 15 ° C . Their source is located together with the origin of the Dammpader and Börnepader in a park on the Paderberg. It is the western of the three sources. The spring water of the Warm Pader is always clear. On particularly cold days of frost, it steams compared to the colder air. The spring basin used to be the preferred place for laundresses because of the higher temperature of the water. The sculptures of the washerwomen placed in this area remind us of this today. The source of the Warm Pader is not a karst source.

Dam pader

The spring basin of the Dammpader is located between that of the Warm and Börnepader. Part of the Börnepader flows into its spring basin in two arms. The name Dammpader goes back to the artificial dam between this Paderarm and the Warm Pader. Until around 1900 the name "Kolkpader" was more common, derived from a deepening of the spring, the "blue Kolk " in the southwestern part of the spring basin. This deep spring creek has now been filled, but the exit point is still visible.

Börnepader

Spring basin of the Börnepader

The origin of the Börnepader is to the right of the two other sources at the city administration. The three spring arms flow together at the end of the park. Börnepader means "drinking pad". At a time when many farmers still lived in the city, the cattle were driven to water at this shallow spring . In 1532 the city had a " water art " built on the Börnepader . The water power was transferred to a piston pump via a water wheel, which artificially transported water through a pipeline system into the Kümpe of the higher parts of the city .

Rothobornpader

Spring basin of the Rothobornpader

The Rothobornpader spring basin is located southwest of the city library near the cathedral. The Augenquelle and the Rothoborn, a very strong spring in the basement of the Kaiserpfalz, flow into this walled basin. It got its name from the blessing by Bishop Rotho (1036–1051) which, according to legend, is said to have gained healing power. Further sources can be found in the cellars of the neighboring houses.

Plank pad

Spring basin of the floorboard pad

Its shallow source is located east of the city library. The name Dielenpader is derived from the earlier path conditions in this source area. Before the construction of today's “Auf den Dielen” street , the Paderarm almost reached the houses. The required road and footpath consisted of just one layer of boards that rested on piles driven into the river bed.

Measles pad

The spring basin of the Maspernpader

The source of the Maspernpader is a little apart from the other sources not far from the historic city wall. Its name goes back to a "villa Aspethera" mentioned in 1036, an open settlement in the "Espengewölz", which was incorporated into the expanding city around 1200. This resulted in “im Aspern”, “Maspern”.

Eye source

The eye pad rises under the building of the city library. It is a small, inconspicuous source that is always relatively clean and shows hardly any fluctuations in its chemistry . In the past, their water was used to "wash their eyes", where people stood on the stepping stone lying in the water . The eye source is the smallest of the Pader springs and flows into the Rothobornpader reservoir.
