The Rottenbach is a 10.6 km long watercourse in the southern Palatinate (Rhineland-Palatinate) and a left tributary of the Michelsbach .

The Rottenbach has its origin southeast of Herxheim on the edge of an industrial park as a drainage ditch for the surrounding fields. After just under a kilometer, the suction ditch, which is usually more water-bearing, flows into the Rottenbach from the right and feeds it with water. About 800 meters after this confluence, the stream disappears in the forest near Rülzheim, where it crosses under the Schifferstadt – Wörth railway line 1.7 km later . From here the water flows in meanders to the weir on the eastern edge of the forest area. Then the Rottenbach crosses under the road between Rheinzabern and Rülzheim not far from the Dieterskirche . Tangent to the southern end of the village of Rülzheim, it cuts through a former brickworks site before it then crosses under federal highway 9 . Afterwards it flows in a small valley through Kuhardt , where it passes the high bank on the eastern edge of the village and enters the Oberwald to the north . From the right, the Oberwaldbach flows into the Rottenbach. It then flows east of Hördt near the Hördter Rheinaue into the Michelsbach.

history

A bridge stone with a building inscription from the early Roman imperial period shows several bridges on the Roman Rhine Valley Road, donated by Lucius Silvanus Probus and crossing the Rottenbach, near today's Dieterskirchel near the Rülzheim-Kuhardt district boundary . Furthermore, the barbarian treasure of Rülzheim was found around 100 meters south of the dammed stream in 2014 . This is a late Roman hoard find from the 5th century, which includes a silver plate and bowl, fibulae and a folding chair.
