The nature reserve is located south of the municipality of Germersheim in the area of ​​the local communities Hördt and Leimersheim and the former local community Sondernheim , now part of the district town of Germersheim.

The Hördter Rheinauen are the oldest and so far the second largest nature reserve in the district of Germersheim. The Rhine floodplain landscape preserved here with the Old Rhine and Schluten is part of the largest contiguous floodplain forest in Rhineland-Palatinate.

The area was designated as a nature reserve by ordinance on December 14, 1966 by the Neustadt an der Weinstrasse district government - today integrated into the Structural and Approval Directorate South in Rhineland-Palatinate - and has an area of ​​851 hectares. It is listed under the protected area number 334008 and is classified in IUCN Category IV as a biotope and species protection area. The CDDA code is 4399 and also corresponds to the WDPA ID .

The area is also part of a Natura 2000 and FFH area with the identification 6816-301 and an area of ​​2,382 hectares.

Flora and fauna
