The nature reserve in Willig is a nature reserve in the natural area Northern Upper Rhine valley in Rhineland-Palatinate .
geography
The nature reserve is in the area of the municipality of Germersheim near the Sondernheim am Rhein district. It essentially consists of the former clay pits of the Sondernheim brickworks run by the Stubenrauch brothers, which were operated in open-cast mining and connected to the area in the south. In the east the Rhine forms a natural border, in the west there are agricultural areas, while not far in the south, the Hördter Rheinauen, the oldest nature reserve in the district, connects.
history
Within the former meandering zone of the Rhine, mining began in the middle of the 19th century in what is now Im Willig, for the nearby brickworks Stubenrauch. After the end of operations in the 1970s, years of fallow land resulted in a collection of above-average secondary biotopes with a variety of different habitats such as wetlands, ponds and ponds.
description
The area was designated as a nature reserve by ordinance on June 7, 1991 by the Neustadt an der Weinstrasse district government - today integrated into the Structural and Approval Directorate South in Rhineland-Palatinate - and has an area of 57 hectares. It is listed under the protected area number 334162 and is classified in IUCN Category IV as a biotope and species protection area. The CDDA code is 163893 and also corresponds to the WDPA ID .
The main protection purpose is the preservation and development of former brickworks clay pits and their surroundings with a mosaic of different biotope types such as open water areas, shallow water and silting areas, reed areas, partly alluvial forest and bushes, ruderal meadows and wet meadows.
Flora and fauna
Since the area is also listed as a natura 2000 area and an EU bird sanctuary, particular attention was paid to avifaunistic occurrences. Recently , for example, the purple heron , kingfisher , marsh harrier , middle woodpecker and gray woodpecker have been observed here. These occurrences are of course related to the neighboring large protected area Hördter Rheinauen .
