Roye (noble family)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The house Roye was a noble family of the high medieval Vermandois in France , which existed from the 12th to the 16th century. Their eponymous headquarters was Roye in the Somme department .

history

The early representatives of the House of Roye were vassals of the Counts of Vermandois. Émile Goët even claimed that the family descended directly from Count Heribert IV , for which he could not give any evidence. The oldest known ancestor of the family is Alberici de Roia , who in 1144 was one of the witnesses of the confirmation document of Count Rudolf I for the establishment of the cell of the Longpont monastery in Héronval (near Mondescourt ). He was named in 1163 with his son Rogonus and his brother Wermundus , when Count Rudolf IV guaranteed him half of the income from the Becquigny mill . In the same year he appears with his wife Helvidis as a witness under a document from the Bishop of Noyon .

At the end of the 12th century, the Vermandois was united with the crown domain after the dynasty of his dynasty and the lords of Roye became direct vassals of the crown. Bartholomäus von Roye († 1237) was a confidante of King Philip II. Augustus (1180-1223) and officiated for him as a Grand Chamberlain . With his nephew John I von Roye he fought in 1214 in the battle of Bouvines . After the Chancellor Guérin , he was (Bartholomeum de Roia Franciæ camerarium) in September 1222 in Saint-Germain-en-Laye the second documented witness to the will of the king.

The descendants of Matthew I of Roye († 1295) divided into two lines. His younger son, Matthieu III. de Roye and his son Dreux de Roye became veterans of the Battle of Poitiers in 1356. Jean III. de Roye and two of his brothers died in 1396 in the battle of Nicopolis against the Turks. In the early 15th century, the older line of the family died out. Maria von Roye, who remained childless despite two marriages, bequeathed the family residence to her cousin from the younger line, Mathieu V. de Roye. He was a survivor of the battles at Nicopolis in 1396 and Azincourt in 1415 and still fought in the Battle of Patay in 1429 at the side of Joan of Arc .

The last generations of the family turned to the Protestant denomination in the 16th century and became supporters of the Huguenots . The last two daughters of the house married the Prince de Condé and the Comte de La Rochefoucauld, two of the politico-military leaders of the Huguenots. The inheritance of the House of Roye came from the descendants of the younger daughter from the House of La Rochefoucauld . François V. de La Rochefoucauld († 1650), grandson of the last heiress of Roye, lost this on August 17, 1630 by parliamentary resolution to Maximilien de Belleforière, marquis de Soyecourt .

coat of arms

The oldest known description of the coat of arms of the Lords of Roye ( de gueule à la bande d'argent ) comes from a list of the knights taking part in the Tournament of Compiègne in June 1238 on the occasion of the celebrations for the wedding of Count Robert I of Artois . Mathäus I von Roye was one of the participating knights.
