Rubí is a Catalan city in the province of Barcelona in northeastern Spain . It is located in the Comarca Vallès Occidental in the hinterland of Barcelona , about 25 km from the sea, and is the fourth largest city in the Comarca after Terrassa , Sabadell and Sant Cugat del Vallès . Rubí has 77,464 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2019). Rubí borders Terrassa to the north, Sabadell, Sant Quirze and Sant Cugat to the east and Ullastrell and Castellbisbal to the west.

The name Rubí comes from the Latin name for the village Rivo Rubeo , which could be translated as "red river".

history

The Greek geographer Ptolemy mentioned a Rubicata for the first time in the year 2, but it cannot be exactly assigned to Rubí. In early Christian history, Rubí was settled from the monastery in Sant Cugat.

economy

The textile industry is particularly important for the development of the city. A striking point is the flood disaster of 1963, which killed over 700 people. In the following years, more and more companies in the electrical engineering and metalworking industry (e.g. Continental , Siemens and AEG ) settled there and pushed the textile industry out of its leading position.
