According to Tauber, Berthold played from 1913 to 1934 as the left and right outside runner for the Dresdner SC in the Association of Central German Ball Game Clubs ; in the senior sector from the 1922/23 season in the district of East Saxony , and in 1933/34 also the first year in the new Gauliga Sachsen , in one of 16 Gauligen as the highest German division in the German Empire . Berthold and his teammates from DSC won the first championship in the Gauliga Sachsen and, when he said goodbye in Dresden, took part in the final round of the German soccer championship . During his membership in the club, he won eight titles with the club. Due to his championship successes, he took part with the DSC team in seven finals for the German Championship, in which he scored three goals in a total of 15 games. Berthold played his first game for the German championship on May 16, 1926 at the age of 23 in a surprising 1-0 defeat against Breslauer SC 08 . In October / November 1923, however, as a 20-year-old, he was selected for Central Germany in the Federal Cup.

In the finals for the German championship, the Dresdner SC struggled with Berthold in the time phase. Once, in the 1929/30 season , Berthold reached the semi-finals with teammates like Georg Koehler , Richard Gedlich and Richard Hofmann ; but that was lost on June 15 in Duisburg against Holstein Kiel 2-0. In its last DM finals in 1933/34 , Dresden retired with equal points - both clubs scored 9: 3 points - behind 1. FC Nürnberg after the group phase because of the poorer goal difference from the competition. The last group game was lost on May 13th in front of 46,000 spectators in the Ostragehege against the "Club", with which the Bavarian Gaumeister was able to create a tie. Berthold had again completed all six final round matches alongside team-mates such as Willibald Kreß , Walter Kreisch , Kurt Stössel , Georg Koehler, Helmut Schön , Richard Hofmann and Friedrich Müller .

For professional reasons, he moved to Berlin for two years as an insurance broker for Allianz Versicherungs-AG in 1934 , where he played for the company sports club Allianz Berlin . After the Second World War he returned to Dresden , where he looked after several lower-class clubs, but also trained in the East German league from October 1952 Rotation Dresden in the 1952/53 season.

Selection / national team

On April 15, 1928 he came to Bern for his only international match . In front of 16,000 spectators, the senior national team met the Swiss national team in a preparatory game for the 1928 Olympic football tournament in Amsterdam . In the meeting, led by the later FIFA President Stanley Rous , they won 3-2. In the runner row, the DFB-Elf competed with Georg Knöpfle , Ludwig Leinberger and Berthold. Like the player from Dresden, Knöpfle was a debutant and center runner Leinberger brought in the experience of an international match.

If the time in the national team was short, Berthold was a permanent fixture in the selection team of the Association of Central German Ball Game Clubs from 1923 to 1931. Three times, in 1925, 1927 and 1931, he reached the finals at the Federal Cup , but only once, on March 6, 1927, he won in Altona with 1: 0 against the hosts, the combined team of the North German Football Association the trophy. With club player Hugo Mantel and Eduard Pendorf from Leipzig , he formed the runner row. Otto Harder , Franz Horn and Eduard Wolpers could not overcome the defense of the VMBV in the north German selection. From 1923 to 1931 Rudolf Berthold was listed with 13 appearances in the selection of the VMBV and thus took fourth place in the list of appearances behind Paul Pömpner (20), Arthur Gäbelein and Eduard Pendorf with 16 selections each in the national cup.
