Rudolf Henn (sculptor)

Rudolf Henn (also Rudolph Henn ; born July 1, 1880 in Olsbrücken , Palatinate; † July 7, 1955 in New York City , United States ) was a German-American sculptor .

Henn first studied at the building trade school in Kaiserslautern and from 1901 figural sculpture at the Munich Art Academy , among others with Syrius Eberle and Heinrich Waderé . In 1907 he accompanied an ethnographic expedition to the Dutch East Indies as a modeller . After completing his studies, he worked as a freelancer in Munich from 1908. In 1915 he was drafted as a soldier. After the First World War, Henn settled in Kaiserslautern in the Rhineland Palatinate part of the Free State of Bavaria , where two daughters were born after his marriage. In 1929, at the beginning of the Great Depression , the family emigrated to the United States in New York City.

In 1936 and 1937 Henn was involved in the artistic design of the Harlem River Houses residential complex as part of the Treasury Relief Art Project , where he worked with Theodore Barbarossa , Erwin Springweiler and Richmond Barthé under the direction of Heinz Warnecke .

In addition to large-format monuments and fountains in public spaces, which Henn executed in stone and cast metal, small-format bronze sculptures are also part of his work.
