Rudolf Rimmel (until 1945 Rudolf Ein , born July 27, 1937 in Gerassimowka, East Kazakh Oblast , Kazakh SSR , † September 6, 2003 in Tallinn ) was an Estonian writer .

Life

Rimmel was born in an Estonian settlement near Ust-Kamenogorsk in the Altai Mountains, and his ancestors consisted of both deportees and those who emigrated voluntarily. His father was imprisoned in 1937 and died in a Russian prison camp that same year. After the death of his mother in 1945, Rimmel was adopted by an aunt living in Estonia and came to Estonia. In 1956 he graduated from a Russian school in Viljandi and then entered the law faculty of the University of Tartu .

From 1960 to 1963 Rimmel initially worked for the Tallinn militia. From 1963 to 1970 he worked in the editorial department of the satirical magazine Pikker . He was then a consultant at the Estonian Writers' Union and from 1976 literary editor at the Noorus magazine . In 1996 he retired due to a severe visual impairment.

Rimmel had been a member of the Estonian Writers' Union since 1966 and voluntarily passed away on September 6, 2003. In his farewell letter he called on the Estonians to say “No” to the European Union , which was to be voted on in a referendum in Estonia a week later .

Rimmel made his debut in the same poetry cassette as Helgi Muller and Aleksander Suuman and initially received little attention or, in exile Estonian circles, panned out. His second collection also met with harsh criticism in places, when it said, for example: “There is little poetry in the book in question.” Nevertheless, Rimmel continued to publish volumes of poetry on a regular basis and was a “widely read poet” in the early 1960s. Occasionally, the influence of “contemporary Russian versesmiths” was noticed with him, some saw parallels in his humor with Uno Laht or Hando Runnel .

Despite his party membership and alleged conformity - in later reviews he was referred to as the “poet of power” - Rimmel was also a rebellious poet who was sometimes harassed by the authorities. In addition to poetry, he also published several volumes of reviews and essays.
