Rudolf von Caemmerer

Rudolf Karl Fritz von Caemmerer (born July 25, 1845 in Koblenz , † September 18, 1911 in Schöneberg ) was a Prussian lieutenant general .

Life

Rudolf was the son of the Prussian officer Gustav Alexander Wilhelm von Caemmerer (1806–1872) and his wife Marie Sophie Nanny, née Hoffmann (1812–1851). After training in the cadet corps in Bensberg and Berlin Caemmerer occurred on May 6, 1862 as an ensign in the Infantry Regiment. 29 and was there on December 16, 1862 second lieutenant . As such, he took part in the battles near Münchengrätz and Königgrätz in 1866 during the German War . This was followed by training at the War Academy . In the Franco-Prussian War of 1870/71 he was seriously wounded in the battle of Wörth by a shot through the heel bone . On September 16, 1870, he received the Iron Cross, 2nd class.

In the years from 1873 to 1886 he deepened his knowledge of troop leadership at various General Staffs and in the General Staff . He taught war history at the War Academy. From 1886 he led a battalion as commander . He commanded the 6th Baden Infantry Regiment "Kaiser Friedrich III." No. 114 from 1890. He led the 12th Infantry Brigade from 1893 and was elevated to the Prussian nobility on January 18, 1896 in this position as Major General .

In 1897 Caemmerer became lieutenant general and commander of the 26th division (1st royal Württemberg) . Since April 15, 1873 he was married to Ida Auguste Charlotte, nee Rüppel (1840-1917). On February 22, 1900, Caemmerer was put up for disposal with a pension . In Berlin he lived at Geisbergstrasse 27.

He became internationally known as a military historian. His writing The Development of Strategic Science in the Nineteenth Century was translated into English and many authors referred to it in their writings. His biography about Clausewitz also received a lot of attention. His writings on the Wars of Liberation are well known and are being reprinted again today.
