Rudolf von Carnall (born February 9, 1804 in Glatz ; † November 17, 1874 in Breslau ) was a German mining engineer .

origin

He comes from a family from Kurland that was naturalized in Sweden in 1751 under the name "de Carnall" . His parents were the Prussian major general Arwid Conrad von Carnall (1760-1840) and his wife Mathilde Le Cointe.

Life

Rudolf von Carnall learned practical mining in the Neuroder and Waldenburg districts , studied from 1823 to 1824 in Berlin and was promoted to the mining office of Tarnowitz in Silesia and in 1830 to the senior driver at the Friedrichsgrube. Here he led particularly the operation of the fiscal lead and silver mine and the then nascent in the development Galmeibergwerke so successful that he became in 1839 Bergmeister was appointed.

The Upper Silesian mining industry took off under his leadership. Carnall initiated the establishment of the Silesian Association for Mining and Metallurgy and headed the editing of the association's yearbook and a weekly. His geognostic map of Upper Silesia (1857), although overtaken by Roman's masterpiece, was of great importance. He retired in 1861.

Honors

At its general meeting in September 1865, the Association of German Engineers (VDI) appointed Rudolf von Carnall as an honorary member.

The mineral carnallite was named after him.

The coal mine United Sellerbeck coal mine in Mülheim an der Ruhr named its main shaft, which was sunk in 1854, “Carnall”.

Rudolf married of Carnall Emilie of Buttner (1808-1863), a subsidiary of fürstbischöflich-breslauischen Official Hauptmann Johann Gottlieb by Büttner, and Christiane Schindler. The couple had two daughters.
