action

Matthew Scudder, known as Matt, is a former cop and dry alcoholic who earned his living as an unlicensed private investigator in New York in 1999. He gave up his job as a police officer after he ricocheted three felons and an innocent child while he was drunk.

He is hired by the drug dealer Kenny Kristo to find the kidnappers and murderers of his wife Carrie and bring them to him. At first, Matt Scudder refuses the job, but after Kristo explains that Carrie has been dismembered even though he paid the ransom, he accepts the job.

Matt finds out from witnesses that Carrie was dragged into a light blue van by two men. In the library, Matt is researching similar murders and comes across homeless African American boy TJ, who helps him with his research. He comes across the case of Leila Alvarez, who was also dismembered and found in a cemetery. In the cemetery he meets the cemetery attendant Jonas, who found the body at the time. However, this does not give him any new findings. Matthew meets TJ again, who tries to tail him because he wants to become a detective himself. Matt forbids him to pursue him any further.

After paying a visit to Leila's fiancé, Matt accidentally sees the cemetery keeper Jonas again, who apparently lives in the house across the street. There he finds his hiding place on the roof of the apartment building, from where he could watch the murder victim Leila Alvarez. Jonas discovers Matthew and threatens him with a knife. Matthew brings Jonas to his senses, and Jonas finally tells about two men he knows work for the drug agency because they had files on drug dealers and a police radio with them. Jonas was present at the kidnapping of Leila Andersen and saw the woman being tortured and mutilated by the two men. He tells Matthew that he fled, but did not have the courage to go to the police because the murderers scattered Leila's body parts all over the cemetery the next day. Jonas mentions the name of one of the two men, Ray, and then suddenly leaps from the roof to death in front of Matthew's eyes.

Matt realizes that the kidnappers are not only driven by the ransom, but also by sadism and lust for murder. In order to be able to trace the perpetrators again, he recommends his client to warn other financially solvent drug dealers of possible kidnappings. Meanwhile, he's investigating another previous murder in which Marie Gotteskind, an undercover drug agent, was killed in a similar manner.

Matt meets TJ again, who shows him a gun he stole from a drug stash. Matt advises TJ to get rid of the gun. Matt notices that he is being followed by a white van. The persecutors turn out to be agents of the Federal Drug Administration who became aware of him because he had contacted the drug dealer Kenny Kristo. After a brief exchange of views, the investigators let their former colleague Matt go again.

Matt wants to put the investigation into the case of Kenny's wife Carrie down after he has found out that his brother Peter first brought the two drug investigators' attention to Kenny and thereby brought them on the trail of his wife Carrie. Meanwhile, TJ is beaten up by the dealers from whom he stole the pistol, which he no longer has with him. TJ ends up in the hospital where he is found to have sickle cell anemia .

When the kidnappers kidnap Lucia Landau, the 14-year-old daughter of another drug dealer, Matt takes over the negotiations. He receives proof from the kidnappers that the girl is still alive and can negotiate with them to hand over the ransom. TJ, who escaped from the hospital, has to bring a small box to Matthew from his apartment. It contains a gun and money mixed with counterfeit money to trigger Lucia.

When the money was handed over to the cemetery where the body parts of Leila were found, the kidnappers let the girl go. However, when they notice that part of the ransom is counterfeit money, an exchange of fire ensues in which Peter, who has come to the cemetery with Matt and Lucia's father to be handed over, is fatally wounded. Matt shoots Ray, who is seriously injured despite a bulletproof vest. The kidnappers flee, but Albert, Ray's accomplice, strangles the injured in their hiding place.

Since TJ was hiding in the kidnapper's van during the shooting, he can telephone Matt to guide him to their hiding place. Matt and Kenny, who has since been alerted, overwhelm Albert. Matt gives Kenny the choice of handing the killer over to the police or vigilante justice. Matt leaves, leaving Kenny alone with the man. He takes TJ to his apartment, but then returns to the hijackers' hideout. However, the killer has since freed himself and killed Kenny. In the subsequent fight in the basement, Matt kills Albert. Matt takes the subway home, where he finds TJ sleeping. There are signs that Matt will take care of the homeless boy in the future.

background

In June 2011 the project was taken up again, with DJ Caruso as director. In May 2012, Liam Neeson signed on to play Matt Scudder. At the same time it was announced that Scott Frank would be directing the film himself. The shooting began on March 3, 2013, New York City and was completed on October 9, 2013.

reception

At Rotten Tomatoes 66% of the reviews are positive, making it "fresh" ( english fresh ). The average rating is 6/10 points, based on 107 ratings. The overall consensus is: " A Walk Among the Tombstones doesn't completely break down its genre clichés, but has Liam Neeson in one of his more compelling roles lately, and that's often enough."

Frank Schnelle from epd Film awarded 3 out of 5 stars. Rest in Peace evoke "the fatalistic aura of US cinema of the forties and fifties, a shabby, hopeless world of violence and loneliness". The film almost completely dispenses with action and tension, the narrative relies “entirely on atmosphere and character, which makes A Walk Among the Tombstones a pleasantly old-fashioned, but at times also quite uneventful B-movie”. Liam Neeson's performance was praised, "which does not have any surprises in store", "but varies the usual type in a convincing way".

Björn Becher rated the film in his review of film releases with 3.5 out of 5 stars and wrote that the director “relies less on action and guesswork than on atmosphere and figure drawing”. The thriller is "extremely exciting", although "breakneck interludes" or "amazing twists" are omitted. Neeson gives his character a “moral compass”, which is why he is “solid as a rock” for the audience, even in the weaker moments of the film.

Cinema praised the “clever and exciting plot”, which largely dispenses with “sensational show values”. Liam Neeson was completely convincing even in this "unspectacular" role.

The film service ruled that Ruhet in Frieden is a "neo-noir thriller with excellent cast, multi-faceted play in the main role", which cleverly plays "with the formulaic nature of the genre" and "sets its own accents through interesting characters".
