Ruin Vörbach

The ruin Vörbach is a ridge castle in the municipality of Pfalzgrafenweiler in the Freudenstadt district in Baden-Württemberg above the Waldach valley . Remains of the keep , the shield wall and a flanking tower have been preserved from the castle .

history

The castle was first mentioned in 1140 as the property of the Count Palatine of Tübingen . The brothers Albrecht and Diem von Steinhilben were named as the first owners by name in 1330. Their father Dietrich von Steinhilben should have received the castle as a fief from the Count Palatine. In 1360 Vörbach was sold by Count Burkhard to Count Palatine Ruprecht I of the Palatinate . The facility was sold by Count Otto I in 1440 to Count Ludwig I and Ulrich von Württemberg . Until 1483 the fief was given to the Lords of Emershofen. Vörbach sold these to the Lords of Ehingen for 1,800 guilders . In 1485 Jörg von Ehingen was enfeoffed with Vörbach by Count Eberhard im Bart . Among other things, Rudolf von Ehingen sold the castle to Hans von Neuneck zu Glatt in 1498 . Wildhans von Neuneck sold the castle estate Vörbach in 1625 for 70,000 guilders to the Duke of Württemberg.

After the big fire on April 24th, 1798 the stones were used to rebuild the place. In 1906 the Black Forest Association built the Nördlinger Hütte, named after a founding member, as a resting and sheltering hut on a tower stump of the surrounding wall. It was last renovated in 1990 and is now used as the club house of the Pfalzgrafenweiler Black Forest Association.

investment

An arched ditch cuts off the castle site from the mountain corner. The foundation walls of the square keep are on a hill. Humpback ashlars were used to build the tower, suggesting a late Staufer construction. The exact height is not known, but it is estimated to be around 30 meters. A large castle complex with numerous outbuildings can be seen on a historical forest map from 1584. In a description from 1625, a summer house, a gatekeeper's house, cattle and horse stables and a well are mentioned. Two buildings used as cattle stables and a sheep barn were outside the castle. Remnants of this are no longer visible.
