Rudenberg Castle

The castle Rüdenberg is the ruins of a hilltop castle above the Waldach the hamlet Unterwaldach the district Cresbach the community Waldachtal in the district of Freudenstadt in Baden-Wuerttemberg .

Geographical location

The castle is located at about 555  m above sea level. NN high spur of the mouth of the small western tributary Weiherbach into the Waldach, which still runs northwards here, at a height of 30 to 40 meters above the valley floor, where there are few buildings on the street Am Rüdenberg south of the closed locality of Unterwaldach.

History and description

The castle was probably built between the years 1220 and 1250 by the Kecheler von Rüdenberg. From 1406 it belonged to Ruprecht III. from the Palatinate , in 1440 it came to the Württemberg people .

The castle was probably a tower castle , surrounded by a small moat , a rampart on which a wall stood, a curtain wall and a ditch to the ridge.

The castle site still shows the walls of the former keep with remains of the defensive walls to the north and south. Traces of fire on the still visible beam supports of the tower indicate the destruction of the castle.
