Rupert Berger (liturgist)

Rupert Berger (born June 26, 1926 in Traunstein ; † June 7, 2020 there ) was a German Roman Catholic priest and professor of liturgical studies and pastoral theology.

Rupert Berger, whose father Rupert Berger (1896-1958) was a founding member of the Bavarian People's Party and later Lord Mayor of Traunstein, was appointed on June 29, 1951 together with Erwin Hausladen, Joseph and Georg Ratzinger and numerous other seminarians in the Freising Cathedral by Michael Cardinal von Faulhaber for ordained priests .

Berger studied theology and philosophy in Freising and Munich. After serving as a chaplain in Berchtesgaden (1951–1954) and Munich (1954–1956), Berger was prefect in the late-career seminar in Fürstenried for one year , received his doctorate in liturgical science in 1964, and from 1957 worked as a lecturer and professor at the Philosophical-Theological University of Freising until it was dissolved in 1968. He then worked as pastor in Bad Tölz at the Assumption of Mary until 1997 . Berger spent his retirement in his hometown of Traunstein, where he also worked as a subsidiary until 2011 . He was good friends with Pope Benedict XVI until he was old.
