Rupert Edward Cecil Lee Guinness, 2nd Earl of Iveagh KG CB CMG ADC FRS , (born March 29, 1874 in London , † September 14, 1967 in Woking , Surrey ) was an Anglo-Irish businessman, politician and philanthropist .

Rupert Guinness was born in 1874 as the eldest son of Edward Cecil Guinness, 1st Earl of Iveagh (1847-1927), and Adelaide Maria Guinness († 1916) in London. Guinness attended Eton College and studied at Trinity College , Cambridge . In 1895 and 1896 he won the Diamond Sculls at the Henley Royal Regatta .

During the Boer War he served in the Irish Hospital Corps. From 1908 to 1910 and from 1912 to 1927, Guinness sat for the Conservative Party in the House of Commons . Until 1920 he also served as an officer (most recently as a captain ) in the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve .

After the death of his father in 1927, Guinness inherited his title Earl of Iveagh . At the same time, he took over the chairmanship of the family-owned brewery group ( Guinness ), which he led for 35 years. During this time, the idea of ​​the Guinness Book of Records was developed and implemented. His special interests were in the fields of agriculture and applied natural sciences. In 1927 he became Chancellor of the University of Dublin , which he held until 1963.

The earl died in Woking , Surrey in 1967 . Since his only son had died in World War II , his son Arthur Guinness inherited the title of Earl of Iveagh .

Rupert Guinness had been married to Gwendolen Florence Mary Onslow , daughter of William Onslow, 4th Earl of Onslow , since October 8, 1903 , who was elected to the House of Commons in the constituency of Southend-on-Sea as a direct successor to her husband . The marriage had five children:
