Ruprecht was a son of Dudo von Laurenburg and the fourth of seven daughters of Count Ludwig I von Arnstein , possibly her name was Irmgardis or Demudis. Ruprecht is mentioned between 1124 and 1152 as Count von Laurenburg. Presumably he ruled with his brother Arnold I.

Ruprecht and Arnold built Nassau Castle around 1120 . Ruprecht founded Schönau Monastery and consecrated it to the Archbishop of Mainz in 1132 . He is mentioned in 1132 as Herr von Miehlen .

In 1124 Ruprecht became Vogt of the Weilburg lordship , which he took as a fief from the Worms Monastery . After Idstein 1122, Weilburg belonged to the Nassau fiefdom from then on. Ruprecht was able to decisively expand the property of his house.

Ruprecht is more often on court days and on diets of Konrad III. called, so Christmas 1146 in Speyer , where Bernhard von Clairvaux preached the crusade . In many cases he appears as a witness in imperial certificates .

Ruprecht was not very happy in conducting the dispute between his house and the Worms bishopric over sovereignty over Nassau Castle; he was defeated by Pope Eugene III. excommunicated in this quarrel and died under the spell.

progeny

Ruprecht married Beatrix of Limburg , daughter of Duke Walram III , before 1135, possibly around 1125 . of Nieder-Lorraine . With her he had the children:

  1. Arnold II († 1158/1159), mentioned as Count von Laurenburg 1151–1158.
  2. Ruprecht II († around 1159), mentioned as Count von Laurenburg 1154–1158.

In a document from the year 1148 a certain Gerhard von Laurenburg is mentioned, who was possibly a younger son of Ruprecht I, but whose relationship is not clear from any document. No marriage is mentioned for this Gerhard.
