The S-Bahn-Ring Wien is a multiple announced link of the railway lines running through the outskirts of Vienna .

history

Although the suburban line , the Donauuferbahn and the connecting line with the main line and the Ostbahn form a ring around the inner city districts of Vienna, until the opening of the S45, no dense regular service included in the core zone tariff was offered on any of these routes. As an improvement to the S45, an extension of the S45 from Handelskai to the Wien Praterkai stop and a compression to ten-minute intervals were planned. The extension of the S45 along the Danube was included in the 2003 Transport Master Plan by the City of Vienna.

In 2012, an extension of the S45 along the Handelskai was considered again, a S-Bahn ring should be implemented by 2015. With the expansion of the connecting line, the S45 could be guided to Meidling. Proponents of such a route refer to the possibility of a direct connection between the western districts and the southern and western railways, the creation of an alternative to the U6 and the establishment of a high-level north-south connection across the Vienna river within the western outskirts. In 2018, the municipal council declared its intention to build a S-Bahn ring by 2025 Template: future / in 5 years.
