S-Bahn in Germany

The Saarland S-Bahn is a planned rapid transit system in Saarland , which is built up from the previous regional railway lines as well as reactivated railway lines around Saarbrücken .

idea

The idea of an S-Bahn for Saarland was suggested by the German Federal Railroad as early as 1971 and later came up again when planning the Saarbrücken Stadtbahn . They wanted to create a fast means of transport to motivate citizens to use local public transport . This idea was taken up again by the transport development plan (VEP) of the state capital for the year 2030 Template: future / in 5 years. Many measures to improve the traffic situation were proposed, including those of the S-Bahn.

The aim is to integrate the mileage of the previous regional trains into the new system. In addition, they want to promote the expansion of old railway lines, such as the Rosseltalbahn . This would make it possible to relieve the heavily used roads, such as the A 620 via Völklingen to Saarbrücken, by shifting traffic.

Together with the state government , the city would like to participate in the development of a Saarland-wide transport development plan, as the rail transport is ordered through the state. The planning began with the start of public participation in the new VEP on February 1, 2017.

The proposals published by Minister Rehlinger in December 2019 for the Saarland public transport system include the plan for a Saarland S-Bahn. The RB network Saar is to be gradually upgraded to the S-Bahn system. In the core network, at least a 30-minute cycle should be achieved during the day, partly by overlapping different lines, and in the final stage even a 15-minute cycle between Völklingen and Rohrbach .

concept

The construction of new stops is intended to give citizens a better connection to rail traffic and thus achieve a higher rate of use. Accordingly, the S-Bahn should travel on the railway lines with modern locomotives and thus also make a contribution to local transport.

In a project meeting of the VEP ÖPNV Saarland on December 12, 2019, three possible development scenarios with different financing requirements were presented. The scenario with the highest financial needs envisages the following eight S-Bahn lines:

line Line course
S 10 Trier - Konz - Merzig - Dillingen - Saarlouis Hbf - Völklingen Hbf - Saarbrücken Hbf - St. Ingbert - Homburg (Saar)
S 11 Losheim am See - Merzig - Dillingen - Saarlouis Hbf - Völklingen Hbf - Saarbrücken Hbf - St. Ingbert - Homburg (Saar) - Kaiserslautern
S 12 Wadern - Schmelz - Primsweiler - Saarlouis Hbf - Völklingen Hbf - Saarbrücken Hbf - St. Ingbert - Blieskastel-Lautzkirchen - Zweibrücken - Pirmasens
S 13 Saarbrücken Hbf - Neunkirchen - St. Wendel - Nohfelden - Neubrücke
S 14 Niedaltdorf - Dillingen - Lebach - Illingen - Neunkirchen - Homburg (Saar)
S 15 Saarbrücken Hbf - Quiigart - Illingen - Lebach - Primsweiler
P. 16 Saarbrücken Hbf - Quiigart - Neunkirchen (- Homburg (Saar))
S 17 Überherrn - Völklingen Hbf - Saarbrücken Hbf - St. Ingbert - Blieskastel-Lautzkirchen - Zweibrücken

This scenario also includes the construction of five new stops: Saarbrücken Rotenbühl and Saarbrücken Saarbasar, which together are to replace the now dilapidated Saarbrücken Ostbahnhof , as well as the stops Völklingen Heidstock, Saarbrücken Rußhütte and Quiigart Süd.
