Armament

G 194 was a large torpedo boat of the German Imperial Navy . The boat was part of a six-unit series, the order ofwhich wasawardedto the Germania shipyard by the Reichsmarineamt in thebudget year 1910. G 194 sank on March 25, 1916 during an advance by German naval forces after a British cruiser rammed into it.

history

Construction and commissioning

The Germania shipyard in Kiel began building the G 192 to G 197 series of boats in 1910 . The fourth boat with hull number 153, for which the designation G 194 was intended, was ready for launch on January 12, 1911 . It was completed in the summer of that year and entered service on August 2nd. The construction cost around 1,801,000  marks .

Calls

The boat, together with the sister ships of the Germania shipyard , formed the 2nd half-flotilla of torpedo boats, while the first half-flotilla of torpedo boats was formed from the boats built at the Vulcan shipyard in the same budget year. Both semi-flotillas formed the I. Torpedo Boat Flotilla.

After the start of the war, the G 194 was used in the outpost service in the North Sea and as a submarine safety device when the heavy units of the deep-sea fleet advanced . Here the boat was involved in the sea ​​battle near Helgoland in 1914 , where it had the first visual contact with the British armed forces and then, after radio telegraphic information from the German leader of the torpedo boat forces, Rear Admiral Leberecht Maaß , withdrew towards Helgoland . Towards the end of 1914, G 194 was used as part of the security forces for shelling the British coast. A brief combat contact with the modern and superior Russian destroyer Novik of the same age during the advance into the Riga Bay in August 1915 is also worth highlighting .

On March 25, 1916 around 9:30 am, took place an attack British destroyer on the German outpost in List , while aircraft of the British Seeflugzeugträgers Vindex the airship hangars of Tonder should attack. After this action was canceled due to the stormy and unsightly weather, the two boats encountered the British Association. The British cruiser Cleopatra overran the G 194 and cut it in two, where it was rammed by the following cruiser Undaunted . G 194 decreased with the loss of 93 sailors at 55 ° 33 '  N , 6 ° 5'  O . During the same operation, the southern German interceptor group also lost the torpedo boat S 22 to a mine hit .
