Sabine Schäfer (born November 13, 1957 in Karlsruhe ) is a German composer , musician , sound artist and media artist .

Artistic activity

Sabine Schäfer studied piano, improvisation and composition at the Staatliche Hochschule für Musik Karlsruhe with Günter Reinhold, Eugen Werner Velte , Mathias Spahlinger and Wolfgang Rihm , with whom she passed her concert exam in composition in 1992. She received grants from the Darmstadt Summer Courses , the Heinrich Strobel Foundation of the SWR and a graduate grant from the state of Baden-Württemberg . In the 1980s she worked as a composer-performer and founded the multi-media group “Panta Rhei” in 1983 with Helmut Bieler-Wendt . Since 1989 she has been a lecturer in improvisation and creativity training at the Karlsruhe University of Music.

In 1989, a DAAD scholarship abroad enabled her to continue her studies in the field of digital sound generation and room sound control at computer music centers in the USA ( CCRMA ) and the Netherlands ( STEIM , Institute of Sonology ). From 1990 to 1992 she developed the spatial sound art project “TopoPhonien”, for which she received the Siemens Media Art Prize in 1993. As part of this project, in cooperation with the University of Karlsruhe (TH) and the ZKM Karlsruhe as well as the hardware and software developer Sukandar Kartadinata, she created her own computer-based surround sound control system with which the artist realized a variety of sound installations . Her spatial sound compositions have been performed and exhibited in concerts as well as installations in Germany, France, Great Britain, Holland, Poland, Italy, Austria, Portugal and the USA. Her multi-channel compositions have been archived at the ZKM Institute for Music and Acoustics since 2007 . Some of the works were set up by the artist for the sound dome, which was established by Ludger Brümmer .

Between 1994 and 2004 she produced radiophonic sound art and experimental audio pieces for radio, as a solo artist and as an artist couple with Joachim Krebs . There were productions with actors and artists such as Rufus Beck , Peter Fitz , Salome Kammer , Lauren Newton and Udo Samel , as commissioned works, among others for the Studio Acoustic Art of the WDR , the DeutschlandRadio Kultur and the SWR .

From 1998 to 2013 she worked as an artist couple together with Joachim Krebs in the field of spatial sound art, sound-light art and radiophonic sound art. The artist couple uses animal voices in particular as the artistic base material for their spatial sound compositions, which they receive from scientific sound archives and whose "inner" sound spaces, which are initially inaudible, are made audible through audio slow motion. Joachim Krebs developed an original method for this in the mid-1990s as part of his “Artificial Soundscapes” project and called it “EndoMikroSonoSkopie”. An essential basis for obtaining their artistic base material is their cooperation with scientists and scientific institutions. For the cooperation between ZKM and KIT initiated by Peter Weibel in 2009, they developed the launch project “MicroSonical Shining Biospheres No. 1". Your exhibition project "SolarSonical Insects # 2" with a public viewing of nature and science as art, which you realized in 2012 for the State Museum for Natural History Karlsruhe, received top funding from the "Innovation Fund KUNST des Landes Baden-Württemberg".

From 2004 to 2008 she was a board member of the German Society for Electroacoustic Music ( DEGEM ) and founded the online radio "DEGEM Webradio @ ZKM" together with Michael Harenberg, which she ran until 2008.

Since 2014 she has been continuing the work of the artist couple as part of her art project TopoPhonien.
