Sabine Sparwasser is a German diplomat and ambassador to Canada . She was previously the Federal Government's Special Representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan .

Life

After graduating from high school , Sabine Sparwasser studied German , Romance studies , English literature and linguistics at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz from 1976 to 1981 . A subsequent post-graduate studies of political science with the main focus on International Relations at Sciences Po ( SciencesPo ) she completed in 1983 with a diploma , and was next to it from 1981 to 1984 as a freelance journalist working for German television. After that an activity on joined 1984-1985 Chair of Joseph Rovan for German History and Politics at the University of Paris-Vincennes , where she was a research assistant for European Integration.

In 1985 she joined the Foreign Service and, after completing the career test for the higher service, between 1987 and 1989, she initially worked as a consultant in the public relations department at the Foreign Office in Bonn and then as second secretary in the political department of the permanent representation at the European Community in Brussels . From July 2015 to September 2017, Sparwasser was the Federal Government's Special Representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan and head of the second Political Department (Department 3) in the Federal Foreign Office . In this capacity she coordinated Germany's diplomatic engagement with this region. The country division for Afghanistan and Pakistan (343), which is part of the department headed by Sparwasser, worked on her task as a special representative. She also chaired the International Contact Group of Special Representatives in Afghanistan.

Sparwasser has been the German ambassador to Canada since August 2017 .
