The continuous population decline in the 20th century is related to the remote location of the place and the loss of jobs as a result of the mechanization of agriculture .
economy
The inhabitants of Saint-Maurice-de-Ventalon lived for centuries as a self-sufficient living from agriculture: In the valleys, grain was cultivated to a small extent, whereas the higher regions were used as pastures. Sheep cheese ( Pélardon ) has been produced here for a long time , but sweet chestnuts and walnuts have also been used for nutrition. In the 20th century, the former paths were turned into roads, which increased the population emigration. Today one still lives from a little agriculture and cattle breeding, but since the 1970s and 1980s tourism and in particular the rental of holiday apartments ( gîtes ) has played an important role in economic life.
history
The region was likely to have been roamed by hunters and gatherers as early as the Neolithic Age and perhaps also visited by shepherds . The foundations of a country estate ( villa rustica ) with attached pottery were excavated from the Gallo-Roman period . During the reign of Louis XIV (around 1700), the area was the target of drastic punitive measures ( dragonades ) against the Huguenots .
With effect from January 1, 2016, it was merged with the municipalities of Le Pont-de-Montvert and Fraissinet-de-Lozère to form the Commune nouvelle Pont de Montvert - Sud Mont Lozère and has since had the status of a Commune déléguée .
