Vegetative characteristics

The net willow is a deciduous dwarf shrub ("carpet willow ") that is mostly nestled in the ground . The yellow-brown to olive-green branches are only 5 to 30 cm long. The alternate leaves are elliptical with a length of 2 to 5 centimeters; on top they are shiny with a pronounced vein network (name!).

Generative characteristics

The Netz-Willow is dioeciously separated sexes ( diocesan ). The flowers appear sitting in upright catkins with the leaves. The male inflorescences are long stalked, red and up to 3.5 cm long.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 38.

ecology

The net willow is a Chamaephyte . The pollination is done by insects .

Occurrence

The natural range of the Netz-Willow extends over Northern Europe , European high mountains , Northern and Arctic Asia as well as North America .

The Netz-Willow occurs mainly at altitudes between 1300 and 3150 meters in the Alps . In the Allgäu Alps in Bavaria, near Spielmannsau , it occurs 980 meters above sea level. It thrives on moist, base-rich, mostly neutral, humus-rich, loamy stone and fine debris soils in trellis willow lawns for 7–8 months in snow-covered slopes and in snow valleys. It is a character species of Salicetum retusae-reticulatae from the association Arabidion caeruleae, but also occurs in humid societies of the order Seslerietalia.

Companion plants are the alpine buttercup ( Ranunculus alpestris ), the alpine bell ( Soldanella ) and the blunt-leaved willow ( Salix retusa ).
