The Edition Salzgeber (officially Salzgeber & Co. Medien GmbH ) is an independent German film distributor based in Berlin. It was founded in 1985 by Manfred Salzgeber and is considered the traditional distributor of queer cinema . Edition Salzgeber has also been active in the publishing business since 2014 .

history

Manfred Salzgeber became aware of the film Buddies by Arthur Bressan, Jr. in 1984 , which was about AIDS , but which no German distributor or TV station dared to try. Thereupon he founded Edition Salzgeber himself , in which from then on films about AIDS and gay and lesbian topics outside the mainstream were included. In addition to the distribution, there has also been a video and DVD label of the same name since 1992, which also makes the films available for the home entertainment market.

After the founder's death in 1994, the company was continued under a slightly different name. Other significant events in 2004 were the participation in the CinemaNet Europe (European DocuZone) project , which pushed ahead with the introduction of digital cinema in Germany, and in 2006 the start of the Classica series in the cinema in cooperation with Classica and Deutsche Grammophon , with which opera and ballet - productions are brought to the cinema.

After Salzgeber was temporarily involved in the Querverlag from 2010 , the edition has also been running its own book program since 2014. A new edition of Tennessee Williams ' novel Moise and Die Welt der Vernunft and three illustrated books were published under their own direction, and from 2017 a cooperation with the Hamburg-based Männerschwarm Verlag was established . In 2017 Salzgeber took over the Bruno Gmünder Verlag and in September 2018 the Männerschwarm Verlag. Albino Verlag also belongs to the newly founded Salzgeber Buchverlage GmbH .
