Of girls and horses is a German film drama and a coming-out film of director Monika Treut , which is also the writer wrote and produced the movie with Bjorn Knoll, from the year 2014. In the lead role embodies Ceci Chuh the 16-year-old Alex, who drops out of school prematurely.

action

Alex dropped out of school at the age of 16. Since her adoptive mother can no longer get along with her, she is sent by her to a horse farm, where she is supposed to do an internship as a groom in order to get other thoughts and learn what real, physical work means.

She is looked after by Nina, a trainer who has taken a break from the hectic city life and wants to treat her partner relationship with Christine to a break. When Kathy, who is the same age as Alex, arrives at the horse farm as a visitor, a deep friendship develops between her and Alex, until the two finally realize that they have fallen in love.

In the meantime, Alex shows a behavior that was not expected of her: She learns to empathize with horses and even after a riding accident in which a mold injured the hoof, to clean the wound and temporarily, but properly bandage without causing the wound to become infected.

After several moments in which not only the lesbian riding instructor Nina lets her feelings run free, Alex and Kathy gain the mutual insight that they belong together forever. The plot ends romantically with Alex and Kathy getting on a horse together and riding towards the North Sea on the beach. Alex asks Kathy if her offer to come to Berlin with her is still available . Kathy says yes and says that she is very happy to have met Alex.

Monika Treut produced the film together with Björn Knoll for their own production company, Hyena Films ( Hamburg ) in 2014. Parts of the film were on the court Rickelsbüll in Rodenäs ( North Friesland ) and the North Sea turned .

criticism

The cinema magazine Programmkino states: “The calm narration and the natural colors of the staging are far removed from a brightly whitewashed horse fairy tale. The protagonists appear authentic and refuse to accept any of the clichés offered. There is also a great tenderness in the restraint of the story, which has the potential to caress the audience's soul. Last but not least, “Of Girls and Horses” is a “women's film” through and through, in which men appear only as nameless extras and in which same-sex love - be it romantic or friendship - is clearly the focus. ”The magazine's conclusion is : " Of Girls and Horses is an affectionate anti-horse girl film that cleverly uses clichés to dismiss them with a friendly but superior smile."

Of Girls and Horses was shown for the first time on May 1, 2014 at the Torino Gay & Lesbian Film Festival in Italy . In Germany, the premiere was on October 2, 2014 at the Hamburg Film Festival before the film was released in German cinemas on December 4 of the same year . In addition, the production was shown in several European and non-European countries, including Argentina , Belgium , Denmark , Canada , Spain , Austria , the Philippines and the USA .
