biography

Maes was born in Edegem near Antwerp . When he was two years old, he moved with his family to Zell am See in Austria , where he still lives today. At the age of six he joined the local ski club and began to take part in races. In his youth he also played soccer , tennis and golf . He graduated from the Saalfelden ski school with a high school diploma and studied engineering at the Bad Reichenhall University of Applied Sciences .

As a 16-year-old Maes first took part in FIS races in New Zealand in August 2014 . In January 2015, she participated in the European Youth Olympic Festival in Malbun ( Liechtenstein ). His first victory in an FIS race came in August 2015 in the slalom at the Tiffindell Ski Resort in South Africa , one day after he became South African champion . His best result at the 2016 Winter Youth Olympic Games in Lillehammer was seventh in the giant slalom. A year later, at the 2017 Junior World Championships in Åre , he surprisingly won the bronze medal in the team competition .

From December 2017 Maes started in the European Cup races, but remained without a countable result in the winter of 2017/18. At the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang , he finished 32nd in the giant slalom. He was far more successful at the Australian New Zealand Cup 2018 in the summer : with a win and three more podium places, he won the giant slalom classification and took third place overall. As a result, he made a big leap forward in the FIS ranking, so that he had his World Cup debut in the Levi slalom on November 18, 2018 . Three weeks later, on December 8th at the giant slalom in Val-d'Isère , he finished 28th, scoring World Cup points for the first time. At the 2019 Junior World Championships in Val di Fassa , Maes won the bronze medal in both giant slalom and slalom. He achieved his best World Cup result to date on March 9, 2019 with 12th place in the giant slalom in Kranjska Gora .
