George Samuel "Sam" Parsons (born June 18, 1994 in Wilmington (Delaware) , USA ) is an American - German athlete who specializes in medium , long-distance and road runs .

career path

Parsons attended Tatnall School in the Wilmington suburb of Greenville in the US state of Delaware from 2009 to 2012 and studied business administration with a focus on marketing at North Carolina State University from 2012 to 2017 , from which he graduated with a Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) Marketing Senior. Since then he has been a professional athlete.

Athletic career

Sam Parsons mainly played soccer in his youth , swam to improve his stamina and was then sent to his first cross-country run by his soccer coach as an additional training stimulus . He liked running much more than playing football, Parsons began systematic running training at Tatnall School and, at the age of 17, set a state record in 2012 in his high school jersey over 2 miles (3,218.6 meters) in 9: 00.61 minutes its age group.

His talent brought him to the college team at North Carolina State University , which he led as captain for three years from 2014. In his last race as a student over 10,000 meters in Eugene (Oregon) in June 2017 , Parsons not only achieved his best placement at US college championships with 15th place, it also felt like his running career came to an end, because his performance in college was so remarkable also were, initially it was not enough for a kit contract, especially since he no longer represented a team. Parsons took a break from running and undertook a self-discovery trip to Europe for several months that got him back to running. Back in the USA, he was able to convince a sponsor with the help of his newly ignited passion to sign him and join the Tinman Elite Team of trainer Tom Schwartz in Boulder , Colorado . One of the group's goals is to provide ten runners for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics . Parsons has not yet decided on a start in the German national jersey at the Olympic Games in Paris in 2024 .

In 2018, Parsons achieved a leap in performance as a professional runner within a year: he ran the 1500 meters for the first time under 3:40 minutes, the 3000 meters under eight minutes, and over 5000 meters he increased to 13: 29.53 minutes. After Parsons failed to achieve his self-set goal of 13:15 minutes over 5000 meters at the athletics meeting in Heusden-Zolder ( Belgium ), he disappointedly declared his season over and drove back to his German part of the family, where he was asked, why he doesn't start for Germany.

In 2019, Parsons became German indoor champion over 3000 meters in 7: 53.71 minutes in his first race in a DLV club's jersey and came 12th over the same distance in his first appearance in the German national dress at the European Indoor Championships . Over 5000 meters he became German runner-up and was eliminated from the qualification at the World Championships . Previously, Parsons had the miles -race New Balance Fifth Avenue Mile in New York City with a personal best time of 3: 55.00 minutes achieved in tenth the goal. This year he had set another personal best in addition to the 1500, 3000 and 5000 meters.
