The Samsung Galaxy A3 is a range of smartphones from Samsung in the mid-price segment.
With the advertising campaign under the motto “A is the new mini”, Samsung confirmed that the Galaxy A series is the successor to the Galaxy S mini series.

The first generation of the Galaxy A3 was presented in December 2014 together with the Samsung Galaxy A5 (2015) . They have been available in large parts of Europe since January 13, 2015.
design
The Galaxy A3 (2015) has a unibody housing made of metal . The edges are beveled and have a reflective effect. On the front are below the large 4.5-inch Super AMOLED - display a physical home button, and a back and a multitasking button, so-called "soft buttons". The back is kept simple. Only the loudspeaker , the camera including flash , a Samsung logo and the type designation are attached to it.
software
The operating system of the Galaxy A3 (2015) is Android . Samsung modified this with its surface TouchWiz . At the beginning the A3 was delivered with Android 4.4.4 "KitKat". An update to version 5.0.2 "Lollipop" followed in July 2015. In October 2016, the update to Android 6.0.1 "Marshmallow" took place.
criticism
Several specialist journals have criticized the fact that the back does not show that it is made of metal. Instead, like older Samsung smartphones, it feels like it's made of polycarbonate .

The second generation of the Galaxy A3 was presented on December 2, 2015 together with the Galaxy A5 (2016) and the Galaxy A7 (2016) . Pre-orders began in Europe on January 18, 2016.
design
The design of the second generation Galaxy A3 has been revised compared to its predecessor. The back is now made of glass. The speakers have been moved to the lower side. The flash now moves to its previous position to the right of the camera . The frame has been adapted to that of the Galaxy S6 . On the front, the edges around the display have been reduced and the home button has been given a new design. The fingerprint scanner is reserved for the Galaxy A5 . Overall, the dimensions of the new A3 (except for the width) have increased.
software
The Samsung Galaxy A3 (2016) was delivered with the Android 5.1 Lollipop operating system . In 2016 the update to Android 6.0 Marshmallow was distributed. Android 7.0 Nougat has been available for installation since May 2017.

On January 2, 2017, Samsung presented the third generation of the Galaxy A3 at the electronics trade fair CES 2017, which has been on sale for € 329 since February 3, 2017.
Innovations
In contrast to its predecessors, the A3 (2017) has an 8 megapixel front camera and an octa-core processor, which continues to use the A53 architecture. The main memory has been increased from 1.5 GB to 2 GB. The A3 (2017) also has a USB Type C port, which only supports USB 2.0. Like the Samsung Galaxy S7 , the A3 (2017) has an IP68 certification and is therefore waterproof and dustproof. Furthermore, the new edition of the A3 supports the WLAN standard 802.11 ac, which transmits in 5 GHz, as well as Bluetooth 4.2 LE and LTE Cat6, which was previously only available in the Chinese model. The display now supports the always-on function, which means that the mobile phone constantly shows the time and notifications. There is no excessive power consumption due to the OLED technology. There is also a fingerprint sensor on the front, which is built into the home button. Other new sensors are an ambient light sensor and a barometer .
software
Android 6.0 from Google is preinstalled as the operating system on the Samsung Galaxy A3 (2017) . Android 7.0 Nougat has been available for installation since the beginning of August 2017 and Android 8 as well since 2019.
