The Samsung Gear S3 is a smartwatch from the South Korean technology group Samsung . On August 31, 2016, the third generation of the Gear series was announced as the successor to the Gear S2, presented at the IFA 2016 and sold in stores from November 18, 2016. The electronic wristwatch is equipped with extensive sensors and designed as an activity tracker . The English sales name "Gear" ( gɪəʳ ) means "equipment".

specification

hardware

The Gear S3 is available in two versions, "Classic" and "Frontier". The "Classic" has a silver, brushed metal case with a black genuine leather strap, while the "Frontier" has a black anodized case made of stainless steel (316L) and a plastic strap. Both have a water resistance class according to protection type IP68 ("protection against permanent submersion") and are water-resistant for a maximum of 30 minutes to a depth of one and a half meters. When designing the case, Samsung took advice from watch designer Yvan Arpa ( Hublot ).

The two-core processor clocked at 1 GHz is a Samsung Exynos 7270 Dual Core. As operating system one comes Tizen -based Wearable Platform 2.3.2 is used. The flash memory has a capacity of 4 GB, the working memory ( RAM ) of 768 MB. Both watches have a GPS receiver for georeferencing and a heart rate monitor.

interface

A touchscreen , a rotating bezel and two buttons on the right side of the case serve as the user interface . The touch-sensitive AMOLED color display has a diameter of 3.3 cm and is made of unbreakable and scratch-resistant Gorilla Glass SR +. The circular display has a resolution of 360 × 360 pixels with a pixel density of 278 ppi. The watch has an integrated microphone and a loudspeaker and can decode and play the audio formats MP3 , M4A , AAC and WAV . With a vibrating alert also one can haptic feedback generated.

Sensors

The smartwatch measures the heart rate with an infrared sensor and can use position and acceleration sensors to determine the wearer's body movement. This movement data can be transmitted and used for the use of activity trackers (e.g. S-Health).

power supply

The built-in lithium-ion battery has a capacity of 0.38  Ah . The computer magazine Chip indicates a measured battery life of almost 32 hours. The watch's battery is charged using inductive energy transmission on a charging station using the proprietary Qi standard .

Connectivity

The Gear S3 is compatible with all smartphones with the Android operating system from version 4.4 “KitKat” via the “Gear Manager” app. The integration of the music streaming service Spotify was not implemented when the product was launched, but only from December 19, 2016. For the United States, Singapore and South Korea, the “Frontier” is also optionally available with LTE mobile communications support via eSIM .

reception

“The Gear S3 is truly a technical marvel and is currently the most sophisticated smartwatch on the market. The app selection is limited and leaves a few wishes unfulfilled. The target groups for this watch are technology freaks and people who do not want to lose a second of their lives connected to the outside world. The telephone function of the watch is a tool with which it can be shown well. "

- Gerald Valentin : Mountain Worlds

“The problem is that the Gear S3 still feels like an experiment, when, in its second iteration (the S2 was the first major redesign), it should really start feeling like a more mature, polished product. [...] The Gear S3 is an insanely feature-rich smartwatch with a big, bold design. But unlike the latest Apple Watch and Android's upcoming 2.0 software update, Samsung's Tizen-based Gear S3 doesn't do enough to improve the experience or support more apps. And few of those apps actually use the Gear S3's standalone LTE. In terms of hardware, it's a better watch than last year's bold, clever Gear S2. And yet, it fails to take enough leaps forward in its software. "

And only a few apps benefit from LTE support. In terms of hardware, it's a better watch than last year's rugged, nifty Gear S2. "
