Samuel Youn (* 1971 in Seoul ) is a South Korean opera singer ( bass baritone ).

life and work

Samuel Youn studied singing in his hometown of Seoul and Milan as well as with Arthur Janzen at the Cologne University of Music and Dance . He has been a member of the Cologne Opera Ensemble since the 1999/2000 season . Here he sang roles like Kaspar ( Freischütz ), Kurwenal ( Tristan and Isolde ) or the title role in Wagner's Fliegendem Holländer . Youn has made guest appearances in Milan, Rome and Klagenfurt , at the Korea Music Festival, in Weimar , at the Mannheim National Theater as Dulcamara in L'elisir d'amore and inDortmund as Don Pizarro in Fidelio .

In 2004 he made his debut at the Bayreuth Festival in the role of the 2nd Knight of the Grail, followed by Reinmar von Zweter ( Tannhäuser ) and the Heerrufer ( Lohengrin ) in 2005 and 2010 . He sang in Parsifal under Pierre Boulez and in Tannhäuser under Christian Thielemann . Youn made his operatic debut in Italy at the Teatro Communale di Treviso . Youn was the first ever to receive a prize from the Friends of Cologne Opera. V. the Offenbach Prize.

Youn has won numerous international singing competitions, such as Toti dal Monte ( Treviso ), Franz Schubert ( Genoa ) and Francesco Albanese ( Naples ).

In 2012, Youn became the first Korean singer to take on the role of Dutchman at the Bayreuth Festival . He stepped in at short notice to replace Yevgeny Nikitin , who, due to an alleged swastika tattoo, decided not to appear a few days before the festival began.

In November 2012 Samuel Youn was appointed musical ambassador for Singende Hospitals eV .
