The Catholic parish church of San Fructuoso Mártir in Colmenares de Ojeda , a place in the municipality of Dehesa de Montejo in the province of Palencia in the Spanish autonomous region of Castile-León , was founded in the 15th and 16th centuries. Built in the 15th century in the Gothic style. The church is dedicated to the martyr and bishop of Tarragona , Saint Fructuosus of Tarragona , and his deacons Augurius and Eulogius. From the previous Romanesque church , an artistically carved baptismal font has been preserved, which is dated to the late 12th century.

architecture

The squat, square bell tower rises to the west and is pierced on all four sides by pointed arches of sound arcades . The nave has two aisles and is covered with a ribbed vault. In the east it flows into a just closed choir . In the west the two ships end in two galleries resting on segmental arches . The south wall is pierced by an oculus with Gothic tracery at the height of the galleries .

Romanesque capital

The triumphal arch rests on half-columns with carved capitals that come from the previous Romanesque building. From the church, which was demolished in the 15th century, parts of the north wall have also been preserved, the outside of which is structured by buttresses and on which a cornice supported by simple corbels runs under the roof approach . Numerous stonemason 's marks can be seen inside and on the outer walls .

Capitals of the Gothic portal

portal

On the south facade, the portal opens under a mighty vestibule covered with a star vault . The porch and portal were built in the 16th century. The slightly pointed portal is framed by slender columns. The archivolts, decorated with round bars , rest on fighter capitals carved with a frieze of vines, bearded heads and depictions of animals. In one scene you can see wolves or dogs, in others you can see birds and sheep.

Inscriptions

Several plaques and inscriptions remind us that the building of such a mighty church in a small town like Colmenares de Ojeda was only possible thanks to the generous donations of patrons . An inscription above the keel arched passage to the sacristy says: “This sacristy was built by the venerable Francisco de Colmenares, Canon of León and pastor of this church, in MDXVII (1517).” Another inscription mentions Pedro Morante de Colmenares, who also donated money to build the church.

Furnishing

  • In the 18th century the baroque high altar was installed, in the central niche of which the sculptures of St. Fructuosus and the two deacons Augurius and Eulogius are located.
  • The stone pulpit also dates from the 18th century and has an inscription carved into it with the year 1762. A cross with flower buds and a skull are depicted on the pulpit body.

Baptismal font

The most important piece of equipment in the church is the Romanesque font . The high basin, which made it possible for the person to be submerged , stands on a low, conical base, which is decorated with grimaces and circularly entwined leaves. The entire outside of the pool is covered with sculptures. One scene depicts the baptism of a child who is immersed in the baptismal font. This scene includes nine people, six adults and three children. On the other side of the baptismal font, the three Marys are depicted with ointment vessels in their hands at the tomb of Jesus, behind which soldiers crouch. An angel points to the empty grave, another waves a censer. Another scene shows a couple hugging.
