San José de Uchupiamonas is a town in the La Paz department in the South American Andean state of Bolivia . It is located within the Madidi National Park .

San José de Uchupiamonas is the central place of the canton of San José de Uchupiamonas in the municipality of San Buenaventura in the province of Abel Iturralde . The village is located at an altitude of 525  m on the edge of the Bolivian lowlands in front of the Voranden chain of the Serranía de Mamuque , which stretches from northwest to northeast between the Río Tuichi and Río Beni and is broken at its southeastern end by the Río Beni.

Two kilometers west of San José, the Río Tachiapo flows into the Río Tuichi . There is a rich flora and fauna in the vicinity of the place.

San José de Uchupiamonas is located on the western edge of the Moxos plain , with over 100,000 km² one of the largest wetlands on earth; the predominant form of vegetation in the Moxos plain is the tropical savannah . The climate in the region is tropical hot and humid all year round, but it can also get relatively cool in winter due to the Surazo (cold wind from the south).

The annual precipitation is almost 2000 mm, with monthly precipitation of around 300 mm in January and February and less than 100 mm in the months of August to September. The average monthly temperatures are between 23 ° C and 28 ° C all year round.

History and economy

The local population had contact with the Incas in pre-Columbian times, as archaeological finds prove. The Spaniards did not colonize the area militarily, but through missionary work by Franciscans and Jesuits. Starting from Apolo , the area of ​​the northern Vorandenketten was developed. San José de Uchupiamonas was founded in 1716 by a Franciscan of Chiquitano ancestry.

The population of San José de Uchupiamonas lives mainly from ecotourism, which takes place to a small extent, and from agriculture. Due to the poor traffic routes, only products for local use are grown. The place is not connected to the power grid.

San José de Uchupiamonas is 91 kilometers south of the provincial capital Ixiamas and about 750 kilometers by road north of La Paz , the capital of the department.

San José de Uchupiamonas is located off the main traffic routes, but is connected to Tumupasa by a 30 km long road that is passable in the dry season . A branch of the 1036 kilometer long national road Ruta 16 runs through Tumupasa , which will lead from Porvenir near the Brazilian border in the northwest to Huarina on the southeast edge of Lake Titicaca . The middle section of Ruta 16 , which has already been completed , leads from the provincial capital Ixiamas in the north on a 115-kilometer unpaved road via Tumupasa to San Buenaventura , from where there is a connection to the rest of Bolivia's road network via Rurrenabaque .

On the eastern edge of the village there is a grass runway that can be approached by airplanes. The place can also be reached via the Río Tuichi, the drive from Rurrenabaque takes 9 hours.
