The cardinal title of Cardinal Deacon of Sant'Agnese in Agone was recreated by Pope John Paul II in 1998.

The eponymous title of a cardinal priest of Sant'Agnese in Agone had previously existed from 1517 to 1654.

history

With the reinstatement of the title, John Paul II has further increased the number of cardinal titles .

The previous title of cardinal priest was established by Pope Leo X on July 6, 1517, after he had significantly increased the number of cardinals at the consistory of July 1, 1517 . Pope Innocent XI. lifted the title on October 5, 1654 and transferred it to Sant'Agnese fuori le mura .
