Sarrià-Sant Gervasi
Sarrià-Sant Gervasi is a district of Barcelona in the northwest of the Catalan capital with 148,000 inhabitants (as of 2016). Compared to the other districts of Barcelona, the population has the highest per capita income, the highest proportion of university degrees, the lowest unemployment and (together with the neighboring district of Les Corts ) the lowest proportion of foreigners.
The village of Sarrià , a result of a Roman colony, was first mentioned in 986 as Sirriano . Part of the old village, Les Corts de Sarrià , became independent from Sarrià in 1836 and is now a separate municipality of Barcelona under the name of Les Corts . Sarrià has belonged to Barcelona since 1927, and since 1984 it has been a district within the Sarrià-Sant Gervasi district . The most famous building in Sarrià is the church of Sant Vicenç de Sarrià , first mentioned in 987, rebuilt several times over the centuries, most recently in 1789 as the current three-aisled church, planned with two bell towers, only one of which was built. The Capuchin monastery of Sarrià was founded in 1578, dissolved in 1835 and rebuilt elsewhere from 1887. The Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza is located in the old monastery of Pedralbes . The Cementiri de Sant Gervasi was laid out in 1853.
The district of Les Tres Torres was named after the three "Torres" (translatable as "towers", "villas" or "residences"), which were built from 1901 to 1903 on land between Sarrià and Sant Gervasi that was previously only used for agriculture . The railway line from Barcelona to Sarrià, built in 1853, was given a station here in 1906, which was moved underground in 1952. In Les Tres Torres there was also the Estadi Sarrià football stadium , which was built in 1923 and demolished in 1997.
The village of Sant Gervasi de Cassoles was mentioned as early as 987, it was named after a primitive rural chapel or church. As recently as 1789, most of the houses were isolated farmhouses in the middle of forests, fields and vineyards. The village came to Barcelona in 1897. At that time, the current district of Sant Gervasi - Galvany was the core of the old municipality, whereas Sant Gervasi - la Bonanova referred to a newly built residential area. The private Ramon Llull University in Sant Gervasi - la Bonanova was founded in 1990.
The El Putget i Farró district has been under this name since 2007. It consists of two parts. El Putget in the north is a small mountain, on which there was a chapel in the 17th century, from 1870 the development began with summer houses, then it became a residential area. El Farró in the south got its name from Silvestre Farró , who built the first houses at the beginning of the 19th century.
Vallvidrera, el Tibidabo i les Planes is the most remote and mountainous district of Barcelona, spacious and barely populated. Here is the 512 meter high Tibidabo , Barcelona's local mountain and the highest mountain of the Catalan coastal mountain range Serra de Collserola . On the mountain, which is made accessible by the funicular del Tibidabo , there is also the Catholic church Sagrat Cor (in German Sacred Heart of Jesus Church ) built by Enric Sagnier , a well-known amusement park and the striking television tower Torre de Collserola . The place Vallvidrera came in 1890 to the then village Sarrià, the hermitage of Santa Creu d'Olorda in 1916. The funicular de Vallvidrera leads to the upper village of Vallvidrera . Les Planes is a rural holiday resort, accessible through the station of the same name on the S1 and S2 lines of the Barcelona S-Bahn .
