Santiago is a municipality in the province of Agusan del Norte on the island of Mindanao in the southern Philippines .
Santiago is 45 km north of the provincial capital, Butuan City . The municipality is bordered by Tubay to the west and southwest , Cabadbaran to the south, Jabonga to the north and Surigao del Sur province to the east .
The site was developed by a group of Indigenous established consisting jabonga had fled. The place got the name Santiago when it became the barrio of the municipality Cabadbaran in 1898 .
In 1924, the place that was then on the Aciga River was destroyed by a flood, whereupon the residents settled in Barrio Jagupit. After another flood in 1936, the residents moved to Sitio Paypay. The place was previously inhabited by ethnic manobos and mamanwas . In the same year Paypay was renamed Santiago after the Spanish name of Saint James the Elder .
Santiago became an independent municipality in 1969.
To ensure the city's water supply, the Cabadbaran-Santiago Watershed Forest Reserve was set up on Mount Hilong hilong .
